I'd like to hear if others experience such extreme overload from synesthesia that their senses go wonky. And, I'm curious if there is a difference between a synesthetic overload and a non-synesthetic one.

Here's my story: I'm the mother of an eight year old with ASD and synesthesia (colour->sound AND sound->colour). He describes to me experiences where sounds & colours become so overwhelming that his colour perception just shuts down and everything goes black with some white & grey. Getting him to go out of the house is sometimes very difficult. He also has many sensory sensitivities that are not related to synesthesia (but I'm told that he doesn't have SPD). I've heard that this type of extreme synesthetic overload is primarily in the ASD population. SO: does it stem from synesthesia or ASD or a combination? I don't think there's an answer to that but I'd love to hear if anyone else has thought of it. But mainly, I'd like to hear if anyone else has had this kind of sensory shutdown and if so, what coping strategies have you found.
