Does anyone have any experience or practical techniques and advice for preventing shutdowns?
Is it purely about stress management or is there more to it?
Try being in a quiet place for a while. You can also try turning down the lights. Do stuff to distract you, such as:
- Exercise. It generates mood boosting endorphins.
- Read funny stories and watch funny shows. Humor also generates endorphins.
- Eat healthy, and enough of it. A healthier diet will boost your immune system and is also good for your mind. Skimping on amount of food leads to depression, crankiness, and being more prone to get sick.
- Get enough rest. Being tired leads to depression, crankiness, and being more prone to get sick, too.
- Listen to and/or play music. This is mood boosting.
- Take courses, either in person, or online. Some of the online ones are free.
- Volunteer. There are people worse off than we are, who would really appreciate the help. It's also a good way to meet people, and boost your self image and mood.
- Take up a hobby or join a club.
- Get involved in community activities. Attend town meetings, events at local libraries and other local organizations. Attend local sporting events, fairs, and art shows. Attend and/or participate in local theater groups. Attend events held at local houses of worship.
- Do Chores. It will distract you from your problems, and you will feel better after getting some stuff done.
I have used some of these methods myself to deal with shutdowns and depression. Although these methods are not perfect and not a 100 % cure, they definitely do help. The key is to distract and calm yourself, so use whatever methods will accomplish that. Hope this helps. ![]()

The only way I know how is to avoid stress overload, that does not always prove to be possible though. I mean even if I am doing alright with managing my life/mental stress there is always the chance of being totally overwhelmed by surroundings like there being too much noise, chaos or certain lighting......the only loud rather crowded things I like are concerts and even that is too much for me at times so if I am already feeling overwhelmed I avoid concerts to.
Too much is too much regardless of what action I take it seems, but managing my level of stress where possible is somewhat helpful. getting enough sleep can help some since its harder to process stress without enough sleep.......but of course I have insomnia issues, so a lot of times I have to take trazodone if I want any decent amount of sleep.
