Is it just me (it probably is) but do some behaviours that are considered to be normal actually appear to be more abnormal or worrying than anything.

Ie publicly humiliating people because they don't conform to some standard or they make a social mistake.

That is just one example...

I find this kind of approach kind of uncalled for and unnecessary. Yet it is condoned as normal behaviour is the general population.

I sometimes feel like the world is actually going mad. either that or I went insane and I don't realise it. The state of the world worries me.

Nah you're good :P I think desiring to humiliate someone in public is insanity, why would any lucid individual want to cause another such harm? Evil.

Society is only concerned with survival.

Everything that is related to survival is right, everything that is not is wrong.

Where do you find this public humiliation is going on? In stand-up shows?

in my yahoo deliverance neighborhood out in the sticks of western washington, i have to avoid neighbors who like to file false police reports against me because they think i'm a pervert, and i have to avoid people who try to run me over in their pickemup trucks and throw things at me and hoot and holler at me. THAT is the general kind of public humiliation the OP talked about.

I read an article about a study done by some Dutch neuroscientists that proved that the reaction in our own brains when we witness someone making a mistake is the same as if we'd made the mistake ourselves so our natural reaction is to try to correct it or get frustrated and do it ourselves or impulsively shout the correct way to do something in an attempt to correct others' behaviour. Its also possible that people shaming others for their behaviour is an evolutionary trait designed to help those who don't conform to acknowledge they're making mistakes (as per the perception of others, anyways.) And need to learn to behave differently if they're to be an integral part of the human collective. Everything happens for a reason. And then again it could be our reason to push the comfort zone of the collective in order to advance various things, who knows. Regardless, it seems to me that there is at least a logical explanation. For why others behave the way you described towards the non conforming "different," people and it may not be as malicious and intentionally rude as you assume.

I think it's the usual herd mentality. Even if you are not wrong or bad, if you are somehow different, some people will try to put you down. People will try to follow the popular crowd regardless of whether it's right or wrong. It's pretty ugly, but I think that way they feel safe.

Seconded. I was thinking this myself just the other day.

It is indeed "herd mentality", but I don't think going to contribute to humanity's survival in the long run....

Scary stuff. 8O

Hello,
Just classic xenophobia, fear of that/those which are different. An instinct of safety in numbers extended to modern society.

It seems to me that most people are unable or unwilling to try and comprehend that there is more than one way to exist or move forward.

Many individuals would prefer to fit in the herd rather than stand out, as then you are liable to be singled out for attack.

Best to try and maintain your pride and persevere with what you feel is the right way to live.
