I woke up this morning thinking I should have food from my favourite Vietnamese restaurant. It's about 7 miles, 2 bus rides and over an hour away. I called them up to deliver my huge order but they said my address is outside their delivery area. So I called a taxi.

The taxi came, whisked me off to the restaurant where I bought $72 worth of meals that will last for a few days. ( I'd only wanted about $40 worth, but the food looked so nice sitting out there on display!) When I got back home I paid the cab driver his $50 - $46.50 fare plus tip.

In retrospect, $50 is kind of an expensive delivery service, but I was so focused on obtaining that food that I didn't care at the time. This must be an aspie trait, right? Maybe sheer stupidity? I had even brought along a large wide plastic clothing hamper to carry all the food just in case it leaked in the taxi.

Here is how I would look at it:

$72 + $50 = $122

Divided by 3 days is approximately $40 per day

If you can eat 3 meals a day it is $13 per meal.

That is not too unreasonable, but was the food really worth it? If you got a tremendous amount of pleasure from it, and the good feelings and taste last for all 3 days then why the hell not?
However, if you are cash-tight, I would not repeat this experience more than once per year, if that!

If you had traveled all that distance for one meal (even at $40) I would say - don't do it again unless the meal was absolute heaven.

I once traveled over 45 minutes by car (each way) just to get "good" Chinese food for the family, with my poor kid in the car sleeping and the rest of them waiting at home wondering where I went to pick up the dinner (China?) When I finally got back, my husband ripped me a new butthole for that one!

I'm not sure if it's an Aspie trait or not. I'd also like to know LOL

I once walked for an hour and a half each way in >30 C degree heat (>85 F) to use a coupon for a free coffee... only spent about 15 minutes in the restaurant.

I'm quite capable of doing things like that. It isn't in the diagnostic criteria, but I'd bet it is an aspie trait.

Could be impulsivity, I guess. Which is more of an ADHD trait, but is seen in aspies too.

I don't know what causes it, but I do the same kind of thing. I rationalize that if I don't do it very often, it is probably OK. I like how you thought ahead to bring the hamper to avoid any problems in the taxi.

I'm not sure if this a trait solely for Aspies. I can imagine an NT doing this too. Did anyone see the Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy? Eddie Murphy played an obese science professor and he and his obese family would always eat extra large portions of various foods for lunch and dinner. They even went to a buffet and selfishly took all of the foods and left nothing for the other customers. They were all NT.

Impulsiveness?
Special interest?
OCD?

It is an Aspie trait to have a one track mind when it comes to completing something we've set out to do, so maybe that's it?

ie yesterday I walked over 10 miles round trip, in the rain, to buy some groceries and supplies for a project - mind you I don't have a car right now and waiting for buses takes nearly as long, so I make that walking trip once or twice a month anyways.

It sounds like something I would do if I had the extra money.

That's the problem. I'm between jobs right now so I should know better than to spend extravagantly like that. Oh well. I'll just keep it all in the freezer and consume as necessary. If it lasts 5 days, then I would've spent $8.33/meal. If it lasts 6 days, then $6.77/meal. A full week would cost me $5.80/meal, but I don't know if I can stretch it out that far. We'll see.

The more I think about it it's kind of a combination of the things I listed above.. and I've done similar things in the past, despite them not being in my finances' best interest. I'm much more controlled about things like that now than I've ever been, though, so it's not as if we can't change or improve and not have this trait continue to bite us in the ass. (Right where your wallet is, more specifically.)

Not sure it is, but if we talk about food: My food budget is pretty much unlimited. Its the only luxury consumable item for me since i do not smoke, i do not do drugs or do other bad things. I hardly ever drink alcohol either so i can spash out on food/drinks whenever i want to. (I'm not against alcohol, i'm just not into it much anymore.)

Sometimes i go to BK and get 3 chicken royale just because i can, sometimes i order expensive but nice takeaway instead. Some days i forget to eat...

To sum up: Mmmm... fooooood :)

 I can imagine myself doing that. My mum always yells at me for spending an excessive amount on food and just buying food impulsively. It's the only thing I spend a lot of money on, food but still it's not like I can afford it or anything

It doesn't sound like a particularly aspie trait to me. I bet a lot of NTs who have food cravings go out of their way to get the food. I know when my dad wants some chocolate, he sometimes goes out to get it. He doesn't spend that much money getting there, or time, and I do think it's unusual that people would, but it doesn't seem particularly aspie to me.
