When AS was dropped from the DSM last December, many were crying out against the blasphemy and heresy of this act. But why is this? I would think people would be glad that AS had been denounced and that their diagnoses didn't exist, just like being freed from heavy chains. Instead, aspies all over the world want to burn the people who decided to drop AS from the DSM at the stake.

Is it because you spent a lot of time and money on something that all this time didn't exist? I know I'm angry about that too.

Or is it more? Is it the sense of detachment that makes you angry? In the same sense that people believe that if they pray to God and go to church that good things will come into their life, people believe that only with the aspie label can they receive preferential treatment and accomodations anywhere they go.

Regardless, Aspergers has developed into a religion, and I wouldn't be surprised if there will be people on the street holding up signs saying "BELIEVE IN ASPERGERS".

I am a non-believer, and thus that is why people on here want to throw stones at me.

*facepalm*

It wasn't dropped, they took that diagnosis out and broadened it to Autism Spectrum Disorder. It's still technically there, just under a different name.

I do not believe that "Aspergers has developed into a religion".

Would you care to cast the first stone?

:lmao:

Okay, I'd like to see any evidence you'd provide, dear OP. This is just a little difficult to grasp: a neurological condition becoming a religion.

In that case, I'd become a NT because of Atheism...

Does the "Church of Asperger's"(tm) perform weddings in Las Vegas?

The reason people throw stones at you is because while AS isn't exactly a religion, having a diagnosis is a status symbol, at least amongst some of the younger crowd. What has become a secular religion is the Political Correctness that infects the entire modern world, including this site.

As far as changing the diagnostic taxonomy goes, that doesn't change one thing about our individual symptoms. I had my symptoms long before I ever heard of AS, and I imagine I will die with them regardless of what they are called. As Shakespeare noted, a rose by any other name will be just as sweet. By the same token, an aspie by any other name will be just as unique and different.

Right.

If they defined , say, diabetes out of existence tomorrow diabetics wouldnt be slightest bit bothered.

It wouldnt matter to them that they could longer get teatment for the illness. It wouldnt matter that they would end up dying in agony. Because diabetics would never make their condition into a 'religion'. They would happily die if the medical community just defined their condition out of existence.

Same with cancer, and emphasema, and AIDS, and leprosy.

Hell...even cold suffers and folks with tooth decay wouldnt care. IF Nyguil and robatussin vanished from the shelves cold sufferers wouldnt care.

No one would care if their teeth started falling out.

If the AMA says 'tooth decay doesnt exist" then tooth ache sufferers would all just suck it in because they would never even THINK of turning tooth decay "into a religion".

^ Thank you.

Also, taking something too seriously is what will get the stones thrown at you.

If all your issues going away because your diagnosis doesn't exist you never really had it in the first place.

Whether you are diagnosed or not you'll still have it if you have it.

You are obviously missing the point. The point is that it does exist; not giving it a name doesn't mean that it's suddenly nonexistant, and the problem with not acknowledging that it exists means that people who need help and services to get a job or live successfully now no longer have access to what they need because their disorder no longer has a name. That's the reason so many people are upset about the AS diagnosis being dropped. Also, explain to me how you can possibly "not believe" in something that has been objectively scientifically proven to exist? That's like saying you don't believe germs exist just because you can't see them with the naked eye. It's an ignorant way to behave. If you really feel that way, you should probably change your status from "Not sure if I have it or not" to "Neurotypical" as you obviously must be sure you don't have it if you don't even think it's real.

So even if what you say is true, do all the associated issues suddenly not exist either. Well done you have found the cure.

I see the waterfall of special treatments drying up too. What treatments and accomodations do most of us receive? None.

And you can keep your ASS religion concept too, thanks.

Best thing you could do is seek some treatment for the bitter frustration that is so evident. Good luck.

I could understand why the removal of the AS label could bother some of them but I'm sure that it's called something else now and it's criteria still exist.

AS is being reclassified as being part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder instead of being a seperate diagnosis altogether.

While the situation is obvious (AS being reclassified), I fail to see any real problems with it.
