If I said that I would literally mean I was going offline to make a cup of tea, which is not unheard of at 9pm.

Assuming you're in the UK and it references an afternoon snack, maybe they just mean they're going to grab a snack to eat and thus will be offline.

Either way, it sounds like they're politely letting you know they're going offline and are going to have something to drink or eat & that's why you won't be able to chat with them for a while/the rest of the evening.

Same phrase, put probably a different meaning, is used by Giant Food to employees.

We physically count inventory for the Giant Food grocery chain ( among countless other corporate clients).

While slaving away counting frozen food or whatever, we now and then hear them announce on the intercom "attention all departments. Its now tea time!".

I finnally figured out what that meant. "T" stands for "trash". There announceing the trash collection guy is coming through.

But prolly folks on Facebook are politiely saying theyre logging out.

Sometimes I eat late. Just trust them.
