I think I've finally rationalized what stimming does, and what purpose it serves.
I've heard it described as "generating output to block input" (don't remember the source of this, but I read it or heard it recently).
For me, it's different. Stimming is basically a way to "throw off" or "shake off" excess sensory or thought buildup. Too much environmental noise (being at a loud party, dance, or sports event) is best relieved by a few hours' recuperation in a quiet environment. Too much deep thinking and stress that results from focusing with intensity on difficult issues - and some stimming helps to "throw off" all the frayed nerves and pent up tension. I think it's a release valve of sorts.
Well, that understanding of it rationalizes it for me, anyway. At least now I have a rational reply to give to anyone who would tell an aspie not to stim, because "only crazy people do that" (yes, I've heard that one before).
