Sometimes when I talk fast, I seem to jumble words (or I says things in ways that are not grammatically correct ) or repeat words in sentences. Other times, I mispronounce words. I've seen the same thing in a girl I know who has Aspergers. (I also had to go to a speech therapist in elementary school.) What I'm wondering is, how common is my experience among people who have Aspergers?

For a core diagnosis of Aspergers there is a lower frequency of speech disorders than classical Autism (by definition), but there does seem to be a higher prevalence than in the general population. I know there is an association with verbal processing problems and AS.

Personally I have trouble with stuttering when I am stressed, and in a few rare occasions I have gone full mute.

I know there has been a number of times when I got in front of a class, to explain something, and either nothing or non understandable gibberish comes out of my mouth.

I don't stutter, but I do often mispronounce words or use grammar that is technically correct, but needlessly complicated and confusing, e.g. "There are times at which, having begun to speak, I arrange my words in orders confusing and overly-complex".

Well, I spent just about all of my childhood in private schools with mostly autie and aspie kids and I know many of them had theses kinds of difficulties. I've always been exceedingly articulate. That's one area I always naturally excelled at. Although when I was a kid I tended to babble or ramble. It was worded well, but came out as blathering. Kind of like, that was really well worded, but what's your point? These days, sometimes I come up short. I'll be saying something and then be at a loss at how to close the sentence. People, especially those who know me well, have to finish it for me.
Me: "and it was very................"
Other: "Nice".
Me: "Yes, nice. Thanks".

One older lady I used to talk to a lot also commented that she could tell that I'm very careful about how I choose my words.

I am not a real aspie, but I definately have some autistic traits.
At school, I tended to speak blurry and slow, having difficulty pronouncing when insecure (OMG, I felt stupid!)
In my 20es, I speeded up and began stuttering for a period. It still happens in a very small scale during inner stress: I stumble over words, get stuck on consonants, repeat words/syllables. Minor disturbances. People don´t really notice, I think.
I have had to learn not to overcomplicate language in speech and writing (like Ellingtonias example).

I don't really have a major speech problem but I am prone to mumbling. Sometimes I have to concentrate on pronouncing my words properly to make them coherent. It's at it's worst when I'm tired. I also can't pronounce my R's properly.

I had a terrible stutter as a child / teenager, still do it a bit but tend to take my time in conversation to give me time to manage the words, I also mumble, confuse words and have a lot of spoonerisms.
I say the wrong words and often mix two words if I can't decide which to use before I get to the word..
It does frustrate me, I even make mistake while talking to myself !
Its like my brain can't work my mouth correctly..

I would say I have issues with voice modulation, because when I was younger, I would get asked not to yell/be so loud, and more recently, I am told I have a "really soft" voice.

I had impaired speech once I began talking a lot at age 3 or so, but my articulation for words was poor enough that most people could not understand me (I also spoke too fast). My mom was able to understand most of what I said, and I did stutter quite regularly until age 7 or 8. I definitely needed speech therapy but did not get it. I remember I used to pronounce a word incorrectly sometimes without meaning to (not sure if it counts)...I still have weak articulation, but I know now my dyspraxia probably affects that and my speech history.

i have always have problems with speech, but i do have a very dim intellect unlike many aspies.

i didnt learn to talk until i was 10 and before then i just babbled and i was very quiet (my mum say i was the easiest child any parent could have). unfortunatly i was labelled as 'mentally ret*d' by my family and i didnt ever get an official assessment or diagnosis for anything.

i talk quite a lot but i have a permanant speech delay which is noticeble. i speak incredibly slow and i find some big words hard to pronounce and so sometimes i sound like a foriegn person learning english. i am used to it now and it doesnt bother me, its just a shame it bothers other people sometimes.
