For the white noise, to drown out other noises as well as to deal with tinnitus.

Sometimes, somehow, a hair gets caught in the blades. I can hear this when it happens and it drives me crazy.

I always sleep with a fan, as does every member of my family, and lots of friends I have. It's more common than I thought, but I had never seen it until I met my husband, and he did it. Now I notice it. I can't sleep without one, and when I go in my bedroom to read or something, I have to turn the fan on, although I don't need it in other rooms.

Yeah, I've heard of a lot of people doing that.

I wonder if other people can hear when a strand of hair gets into the fan and makes that horrible noise, though.

I used to do the same when I was living in college halls if there were people speaking or playing music at night. I'd just leave the bathroom light on which kept the fan going, much better to have a uniform (predictable) sound than trying to ignore conversations. You can actually get white noise machines, so I guess it's a fairly common preference among people generally.

I don't know that I've ever noticed hair in there, but because we have dogs who shed a lot and we smoke, our house gets dusty fast, so besides my regular dusting, I clean the fans once a week. I take the front grill part off and run a brush over it, then wipe the blades with a damp soapy cloth and run a brush over the grill in the back of it.

Sometimes when it oscillates the blades hit the grill and that's a horrible noise but I just keep it off oscilating. I'd keep my hair and brushes away from it and clean it regularly and maybe that won't happen. I do notice any changes in it. Like, I have to keep it on 2 because 1 is too low and quiet and 3 is too high. It's not about blowing on me either, I have a ceiling fan for that. It's all about the noise.

No. I wouldn't even think a hair would make a sound. Are you sure that's what it is?

Wow, I was just about to post this same thread! Last night I was kept up by a hair in my bedroom fan, it was awful! :(

Before I met my husband, I used to listen to the radio to fall asleep. Well before I started staying at his place at night. I started listening to the radio at night when I was in 6th grade because my best friend did. My husband can't stand a radio in bed. I still sometimes like to fall asleep to soft music (Loreena McKinnett) or one of those nature tracks, etc, but I keep the fan on as well.

I often do that, but these days, two fish tanks are running in my room. That is enough white noise for me!
Unfortunately, I often get aural matrixing out of that. Think people are talking or that I left the TV on.. LOL

Sincerely,
Matthew

I have a fan on most of the day during the muggy Auckland summer. But I don't have it on at night. I do actually think that the sound comforts me and helps me to work, now that I think about it.

You're not Korean, are you? I sure hope not, or you might be in some serious danger.

   ... good one!

Has anyone else ever heard of "Korean Fan Death"?

Wikipedia wrote:
Fan death is a widely held belief in South Korea that an electric fan left running overnight in a closed room can cause the death of those inside. Fans sold in Korea are equipped with a timer switch that turns them off after a set number of minutes, which users are frequently urged to set when going to sleep with a fan on.

Mere superstition.

It's interesting how individual preferences can differ. I don't like any kind of noise, I just tolerate them. If there would be a fan on I'd have to tolerate it, though I admit I've never tried it. I've tried music though, I just can't fall asleep to music. There's always something in it that'd keep me half-awake, I have to listen to it, music would flow through my mind...

I don't like a fan on me when I sleep. I had a boyfriend when I was 18 that always wanted a fan on when he slept and I hated that. It made me cold.

I don't know about hearing a strand of hair in a fan but one noise that bothers me that no one else seems to hear is the tearing noise I sometimes hear when getting rid of a spiderweb. I have a phobia about touching spiderwebs.

It's also pretty bad when it is quietly rattling on the floor or table, and you have to put a towel under it or something, to cushion the sound.

Then when you go and sit down it starts doing it again...

I have two, but yeah. They're running pretty much all year 'round, even during winter, unless the power goes out or I'm cleaning them. Don't ever like complete silence.
