Yesterday while I was working at my job in 'MegaMart',* a mother shared with me that her son is on the Autism Spectrum. I shared with her that I self-diagnosis as being on the Spectrum.

Her son is 18 years of age and is high functioning. I asked her if he has any sensory issues. She said he has issues with enclosed spaces such as elevators. He also struggles with reading.

And so, it occurs to me that people who struggle with reading are not likely to be big participants here at Wrong Planet. Which is okay I guess, I mean we can't serve every human need, but is also one more reason why it is valuable to have a variety of groups for people on the spectrum, for self-advocacy, for networking, and for providing and making available different kinds of help.

*I work as a cashier. At this time, I'd prefer not to disclose the name of my current workplace (I have talked about one or two previous workplaces, but I'd rather not give away my whole resume)

Hi. I was tested and diagnosed a year ago with high functioning autism too. I have reading comprehension problems too as well as writing, etc.

Hello.

I'm not yet diagnosed officially, but do have many autism characteristics.

I'm very poor at reading. Not that I cannot comprehend what I read. It seems to take me so much effort and time just to read. I often need to reread the same sentence a few times to understand what it actually means (processing problem?). My eyes also seem to be slower to follow the written text than other people's do. It was not bad enough to affect my study and I did successfully complete my degrees, but it was a struggle.

I often skip reading long posts on WP because it would take me forever to read them. I still come to WP because this is the only place where I can kind of interact with people (though very few people actually interact with me).

I don't know if there is any therapy for reading problems.

I have the same problem. I just can't take in the long posts people put. If I'm honest, I didn't manage to read your original post fully. I just like participating in the polls and seeing how much I share in common with a lot of people, since I am almost certain I'm on the spectrum. I think it's the reason I get low grades in English language; I just can not process the information in the time given in exams. I also just hate books, since I lose interest of them because I have to read each sentence about 10 times, and just go back and read entire paragraphs, and just get bored and watch a film of the same plot instead. I can't even re-read my own post without just losing interest in it. That just could be that I'm lazy, but it's still annoying me.

I used to have trouble reading, but after I got into computer games I got a lot better. I still have a ton of trouble reading out loud though

I was always good at reading, but I need to be interested in the topic/story, and especially when reading online I need paragraphs if it's long because I find screens to be a bit tiresome to read from.

me and my husband both have reading issues but both in different ways. like everything else, i always been behind on my reading, and i still am to this day. some words i just cant understand and so i got to read it a few times to reckognise what it is. this usualy make me take long time with reading.

my husband is different, he is adhd and so although he reads at normal pace he cant stay focused and so loses interest quickly. he also dislikes reading, where despite my reading difficultys i still enjoy reading.

Reading is a strength for me. I have abilities to both skim and also read slowly kind of as if I'm studying.

I don't have any problems reading but I don't enjoy it, only very small sections at a time to glean information. To read a book, especially fiction, is exhausting and monotonous.

I think it's something to do with having to focus on it which brings me out of my preferred introspective state.

Feel like your husband about reading.

That has largely been my experience with WP. For example, I have shared some about my father's violence. And I'm not really sure anyone has said, 'Wow. you seem like an alright guy, I'm sorry that happened to you.'

I cannot stop reading if I am interested in the information in the book.

I cannot keep reading if I do not care about the information in the book.

I've always had problems with reading. Probably ADHD coupled with some form of dyslexia. I have to be selective on WP. If what someone is writing is too long or seems too complected, I usually have to skip it. If a thread is too long I have to skip it or I'll end up spending hours trying to sort it all out. If I can't kind of skim what's being said, I have to skip it.

Sometimes I'll give a wrong reply because I didn't read the material well enough.
And I break things down into paragraphs when I post, instead of it all being one big block, because I figure there's people who have the same difficulties with reading.

I don't read newspapers and stuff like that, because it would take me all day to get through one.

I'm about average at reading. I can easily understand short texts but often don't have the patience for texts which are too long. Or I struggle to keep track of what I've been reading earlier in the text. For this reason I never read novels - at some point I will usually forget who some character is or the context in which a part of the novel is based on. The language tends to be more difficult than in other texts as well. Studying English Literature was one of my worse subjects at school. But now I notice a lot of people (usually older) read slower than I do and tend to read what they read aloud. And at the same time some people read at crazy speeds and finish novels quickly.

Since you quoted me, I quote you back and acknowledge that you do seem like an all right guy. And I'm sorry that I don't think I read your post(s) about your father's violence.

I seem to relate to the above poster in many ways though I don't think I have ADHD.
