I am doing a Bachelor in Criminal Justice and the Courts stuff sounds like blah blah blah from Charlie Brown and is overall confusing me!! ! Yet my friend a WP member suggest I read two Criminal Justice books from FBI profilers and while the theories escape me I can recall the gruesome cases in great detail. Is this called anything specifically? I assume just push through my degree and do something detail oriented. I believe this could be a useful skill remembering cases that I might do professionally at a job. But I don't remember theories or anything of importance.

I'd go into detail but I know it's "Socially inappropriate" to talk about and freaks people out. I think this is the main reason I don't have friends. They see "Gruesome case" PUKE me "Oh interesting!" What did he do again WOW! He killed 30 people! etc. He did WHAT TO THEM KILLED THEM HOW!? WOW! (While the rest of the class want to go puke) the above runs through my head and I'm sitting there wide eyed and engaged in the video on a serial killer!! ! (This is what I thought while doing my Criminology class)

:-(

Overall, it is considered to be a trait among ASD vs seeing the big picture, but like most things not everyone has it.

I found a book on toxins and how they were used to kill people quite interesting. I think this just has to do with how we tend to remove emotions from things that interest us (or at least I do) and look at them more objectively (I think that's the word.)

Good point. I believe being in Criminal Justice or doing what I want to do Profiling you have to be objective and leave your emotions out of it which can be hard to do for NTs who "attach" to everything. Most feel OMG! Nice guy next door is a killer!! SHOCKER! Personally I try to be alert to my whole surroundings and sounds. I believe ANYONE can be a killer. Sadly society hasn't understood that area yet and are still shocked there boss/police/teacher are a killer.

Exactly. Like ill get attached to my pets, but when they die after a few hours I an start hypothesizing about why they died and whether it was painful or not.

People think I'm strange because I'm suspicious, like if someone takes my phone I automatically assume the worst. I call it a coping technique because I spent a lot of time being tricked by people who took advantage of the fact that I thought everyone was as honest as I was.

I read that BTK Killer Dennis Rader got a degree in criminology while working for a home security company while targeting and killing people. I read that serial killer Ed Kemper wanted to be a police officer, but was rejected from police training for being too tall at 6 foot 9, so hung out with police officers at bars and killed people instead.

That's pretty interesting. I love the irony (I think that's what it is) of the first one.

How does being too tall affect ones abilities as a police officer?

I just did some reading about Edward Kemper. Boy, was he depraved! If he was rejected from the police force I'll bet it was because he failed their psychological tests and, at 300 lbs, was a health risk anyway.

I never miss the forest for the trees. I find details tedious.

When investigating, police like to have "several pairs of eyes" look at things. Perspectives differ. Contact your local PD and see if you can do a "ride along." Years ago, I hung around with several officers and spent a lot of time riding along. Different types of people notice different things. You will see how your talents and characteristics help.

I run into problems with my "detail orientation": my dad and I have had many conversations that wound up in shouting matches, with him saying things like, "Don't get hung up on the wording!" or, "It's just a story, most people aren't interested in that level of detail!" or, "You need to look at the bigger picture; people are allowed to change up a story that's already been made to do something different; it doesn't matter that they don't stick to the details!" I of course find this very frustrating, because as far as I'm concerned, these "insignificant" details are very important, and things get ruined for me when the details aren't just right. I'm also a stickler for detail regarding time; if someone asks me what time I'll be home, I do my best to calculate it and come back with a response like, "8:17", but when I ask people when they'll be here or when they're leaving, and they give me answers like, "Oh, in about half an hour," and then take forty minutes, or, "Sometime this afternoon," it drives me crazy.

BTK Killer Dennis Rader was the leader of his local neighborhood watch/enforcement group, and he was hated by his neighbors for being a control freak about their properties and pets. Serial killer Ed Kemper killed his grandparents when he was a teenager, was committed to a mental institution, charmed the psychologists with his intelligence and good behavior, and was released in a few years.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Different people pay attention to different things. When I and someone else talked about our favorite TV program, what he remembered and what I remembered were pretty different. He was interested in certain aspects while I was in others.

I'd still say I'm a detail-oriented person who tend to (initially) neglect the big picture. My strength lies in detecting and remembering details that others don't even consider. I think the OP has similar tendencies to mine.
