My 2 children dx'd PDD-NOS hate birthday parties. However, I do not seem to be bothered by the lights and sounds at parties, although I have vague recollection of getting overstimulated at a bat mitzvah when I was 11. Is hypersensitivity/overstimulation at parties an Aspie trait or can some Aspies be not bothered by the sensory cocktail of birthday parties?

Oddly enough my youngest son was OK once the lights were turned brighter (even when the music was playing). Both kids wanted to stay away from the party room. I was the only parent whose kids didn't want to be inside the room with the fun.

No. Hyposensitivity is also a trait.

And I'm *sort of* hyposensitive, e.g. I fail to hear exactly what some people say. I hear the voice perfectly clear but I sometimes can't pick up the words, and I prefer having a TV or computer on loud to hear music to hear everything as a whole properly.

I know of Aspies who are neither hypersensitive nor hyposensitive to sound. Hypersensitivity is commonly found in people with ASDs, and hyposensitivity is, albeit a little bit rarer.

You should probably phrase it differently, like "Is hypersensitivity a common aspie trait?" Because there are always exceptions to every rule, so the phrasing "All" indicates that it's either a yes or no answer, rather than a "some" answer.
But either way, I am hypersensitive to sound. Very much so.

I hadn't realised that

I am hypo sensitive to sound then!
I have wondered because I thought that was me not being very aspie

Oh yes
Forgot to say my husband is Aspie and is sensitive to sound!

I don't know about "all Aspies," but this one is! Today was particularly difficult in a foreign grocery store with overly loud & annoying music. As soon as I walked in, I had to cover my ears.

As a child I avoided parties, sometimes I would get invitations at school and I would throw them out before I got home, so my mom wouldn't see them.

What you are describing is not hyposensitivity to sound, it's auditory processing dysfunction, something completely different.

I have various hyper and hyposensitivity issues. I don't think my brother who has AS does.

No we are NOT all hypersenstive to sounds and lights. I am hyposenstive to sounds, when I am focused on something I tend to tune out sounds unrelated to what I am focused on. Lights bright or dim are of no bother to me either.

I don't mean to be stupid, but...what's the difference? I'm kinda confused. :?

I am hypersensitive to sound, but at the same time, I some times experience the above described. It used to terrify me as a teen. I didn´t know, that others had the same odd experience and I sure didn´t dare ask a doctor.

Just like there are loads of non-autistics with some sensory issues, there are autistics without severe sensory sensitivutiu, either having grown out of them or having other issues like hyposensitivity etc.

I'm hypersensitive to sound and colour,
but hyposensitive to touch and smell.

^ I have HUGE issues with this. I am hypersensitive to sounds in addition to the processing issues. Louder isn't better. Thank goodness for subtitles.
