I wish I could use something like that to communicate. I have been told (and proved to myself too) that I am better at socialising online than I am verbally. If I was to speak in a group of about 5 people in a room, I would be sitting really quietly feeling shy and awkward, but if I was to have an online chat conversation with 5 people, I would be really good, write all the appropriate things and really be an excellent communicater. I think I am afraid to hear my own voice when speaking in a group conversation, but I am not shy to write everything.

But since I have been verbal ever since I was about 1 and a half years old, and still am able to speak now like everyone else, I can't just change into a non-verbal person who has to use gadgets to communicate. People won't take me seriously, and I doubt I would be able to go into work with one.

I'm exactly like this too. I communicate great when I write and type something out. It's much harder for me verbally. Most of the important things I want to say to people I usually do by email now. At my last doctor's appointment, I actually wrote him a letter rather than try to explain everything verbally. It was probably the most productive appointment I've been to.

I often communicate in writing down on paper, I do not have a device like that.
So I write down on paper and show the paper to the person I want to communicate with.
I am not non-verbal in the sense that I cannot form words at all, but I have severe mutism, especially with people who are not familiar to me or in unfamiliar situations.
Writing helps a lot.

Identical! Was even thinking of writing to the doctor today to ask for an assessment for Aspergers, apparently I am entitled to ask for one under the Autism Act (in the UK).

I was told I have mild selective mutism as a part of my autistic disorder (it says not possible on the Internet) but it is.

I have this selective mutism too.
I think, that it does exist as a part of autism, but it would just not get diagnosed seperately, whereas it can get diagnosed if a person is not autistic.
