Today, I was remembering how last year I had a huge interest in names and their meanings/origins (much to my mother's frustration) and was a very active member of an online forum related to naming. Most of the members there were adults with children, along with some childless adults interested in names, and often my age really showed through in my posts. I knew I was younger than everyone, and the day I joined one member decided to call me out on something I'd said that offended her (though I didn't mean it) and straight away I felt like a social outcast all because of my age. I've quit the site since due to losing most of my interest in names, but I sometimes wonder if they threw an online party to celebrate me leaving or started saying what they really thought about me once I left.

Has anyone else with an interest that's considered "age-inappropriate" joined any sort of group, online or offline, related to that interest? How did the other members react to you, and how did you cope?

I started to cross stitch when I was around eight. I think adults got a kick out of it, honestly.

I'd probably be the youngest in any interest group that I join, because I'm mainly interested in the same things as the Baby Boomer generation, even though I'm a part of Generation X.

I'm the youngest in my book group and it's fine. There's another woman who I think is in her thirties, and everyone else is in their fifties, sixties, seventies etc. We all get on fine, and occasionally I will understand something that they don't, due to my age.

90% of the people who went to the concerts and music festivals I frequantly attended as a teen were old enough to be my grandparents or at least were past the mid life crisis part of their lives. I think most of them relised I was not an ordanary teen like they would generally dislike and made me feel like an equal member of the group since my intrests were genuine and I was knowageable.
