I cannot study properly anymore. Even a car going along the road completely throws me off my studying. A person walking down the stairs in the house next door disturbs me. Let alone the noise the people in this supported housing make.

I've tried wearing ear defenders but the low-frequency noises get through them.

Also I have the curtains shut all day; even daylight blinds me. I have complex visual problems and my prescription glasses only go dark in response to sunlight. I can't just wear sunglasses as I am dependent on my prescription glasses to function in life. I am considering going to my specialist optometrist and asking for prescription sunglasses but they may cost something like £300! I can't afford that!

I live near an accident and emergency department in a major hospital; the sirens are enough to make me want to harm myself. Even with the windows closed.

I have my second year pharmacology exams in July.

How can I study if every single noise, light, even the clothes on my body, hurts and distracts me until I feel like tearing all my clothes off and screaming?

I am trying to move out into a flat of my own, but I've been forced to go through the council, so I expect waiting lists.

I'm so sorry you are suffering like this. I don't know what to suggest, but I just wanted to let you know that someone understands and cares. I hope it gets better soon and that you will find a better place to live. I also live in a noisy neighborhood with little chance of leaving anytime soon, so I can commiserate! Good luck and hang in there,
Amelia

I know this is of no use to you whatsoever but I really do understand, I'm in a pretty similar position myself. I promise if I come up with anything to help I will pm or post to let you know. Sorry for being useless.

Hi, here in the states we can buy quality clip-on sunglasses, that gently clip on the sides of your regular glasses, for about $30.

The part with the ambulances would drive me up a wall, too. When I worked in a photocopy center, I sometimes used wax earplugs that kind of made the noise sound far away. I did not like foam earplugs.

School says they support in-depth studying, but they really reward skimming. For years I thought the in-depth method was the only right way to do it. Now, I more appreciate having a variety of skills, including at times skimming methods.

Thanks all.

I have ear defenders and I have ear plugs, but I prefer ear defenders as I have a condition of my ears that makes them not remove ear wax in the normal way (most ears clear out most excess ear wax), so earplugs get sticky quickly.

It's just that summer is approaching in the UK (it should have started already but UK weather is always messed up), and I won't be able to live in a 28 Celsius room again like last year, and that was with the windows open when I wasn't in my bedroom (I'm going to be in my bedroom a lot as my exams have been deferred this year to July).

I will look for the clip-on sunglasses, good idea.

I got QT 15 noise cancelling headphones. They're expensive...over $100 even if you order them online but they do work really well. They play music at the same time as a blocking out background noise. Also I read out-loud to myself while studying. This way I make my voice louder than the surrounding noise. I don;'t know if these things would help you but my sensory issues with sound are pretty bad and that's what I do.

I don't know what to say or what advice to give you but I answered your question just to let you know that I do truly understand what it's like to be so sensitive to every stimuli in existence! It's hell on earth, nothing like it can compare to what we're feeling when we become so overwhelmed by sight or sound or touch. You have my sympathy and empathy and prayers. I'll be thinking about you...take care!

I can't come up with much advice because I'm in the same situation, so I definitely know how you feel 100 percent. Light doesn't bother me, in fact I get upset if my room isn't bright enough, so in the day I draw the curtains open as wide as I can and at night I switch on the light as soon as it starts to get a bit dark.

But I cannot concentrate on anything when I can hear noise. If I'm in my room and there are people in the house, I get so angry, and want to throw a tantrum like a 3-year-old. But I try to take it the adult way and do something about it, like put earplugs in or distract myself with something else whilst having earplugs or music in my ears. My bedroom is downstairs, which is the stupidest thing in the world because all the unwanted household noises are practically right outside my door. But it's the biggest bedroom in the house, the rooms upstairs are too small and I need plenty of space for all my clutter :) .

I can't afford to move out right now, and living with others is OK, until you get their relatives coming round and disrupting my peace. Tomorrow is going to be one of those hectic days where everyone in the family are going to flock to my house for some reason, and there's going to be a lot of hustle and bustle of chattering, kettles, cats miawing, TVs murmuring, doors left open because of everyone hovering about......it's going to drive me MAD, so I am working on a plan to escape for the day. My dad is not Aspie but still hates hectic times in our house, but he goes out to the pub where he always goes, and only men are allowed in there so I can't even go there with him to get away. I know pubs are noisy and busy but at least it's not my own home. When I'm in my own home I like to have peace and quiet, especially if I get really tired and want a nap.
