Poor guy, I bet this contributed:
Quote:
When he was 17, Mr Inman was diagnosed with schizophrenia but when his case was reviewed in 2008 doctors then diagnosed that he suffered from Asperger Syndrome - a form of autism.
Initially undiagnosed for years and no doubt without help, then misdiagnosis and possibly even inappropriate medication no doubt put him in this state. Sounds OCDish too, which will have spiralled out of control in his attempts to control his environment after going through all that.
Edited to add: One respondent said this:
Quote:
Polydipsia -- excessive, uncontrolled thirst -- seems to have stimulated Mr. Inman to drink fluids excessively, leading to hyponatremia, meaning that he accumulated fluid in excess of what his body's store of salt could accommodate. His lungs therefore swelled with fluid as if he had drowned. There are numerous possible medical causes of polydipsia and hyponatremia, including medications, inadequate dietary salt, tumors, and neurological, kidney, and endocrine disorders. Plausibly, the mental confusion and manic behavior that can attend such ailments and which are a classic feature of hyponatremia -- sometimes called "water intoxication" -- were attributed to his psychiatric disorder. Notably, doses of salt and correction of the underlying cause should have remedied the excessive thirst and fluid intake and thereby spared Mr. Inman. Indeed, his psychiatric symptoms may have been aggravated by or even primarily caused by whatever was responsible for his excessive thirst.
So had they been attentive enough to his psychological issues and his medical ones it would never have happened. Excessive thirst is a warning sign of a few things, including diabetes so he should have been checked out. This was a controlled care environment too.
RIP.
