Aspie thoughts on "The Purge" (movie)
Hello my fellow aspies!
I was just wondering if any of you have seen/heard of this new sci-fi movie called The Purge - it opens this weekend in my place, and I couldn't help but bring this topic up here.
So in a nutshell its in the year 2022, and basically the American government has decided that in order to maintain its low crime and unemployment rates, it has one night where all crime (including murder) is legal and that police and hospital services are shut down.It seems like and interesting movie that I would probably go see, but from the previews it also seems like a rather terrifying prospect, at how fast society would crumble - would so many people kill if it wasn't illegal?
Anyways, my point is - without trying to overgeneralize - what would it be like in this were to take place in an aspie/asd majority, I for one am very rule oriented and can't see myself committing a crime even if I could get away with it.
What are your thoughts?
No.
People who're willing to murder another human being would do such no matter the legality of it (not to mention that to murder someone, you're willing to face the risk of them fighting back and killing you in return -- that'd trump any punishment down the line).
"It's illegal, so people won't do it", is something legislators say to make them feel like they're doing something.

The premise of the film is that there is a class of people-normally law-abiding-who would commit crimes if they could do it with impunity. I believe its a sound premise. Many, perhaps most people (including Aspies, who I believe to be very ethical group) ,would not.....but some would. If society not only allows you to do evil, but even encourages you to do so, some will take that opportunity. Look at what happened in Nazi Germany. Many of the people who engaged in murderous behaviour in the army and police could in no way be described as sociopaths, let alone psychopaths....yet....

Well, I've only seen the trailer, and read the movie plot, let me just explain it a little more thoroughly:
This is a Dystopian film, where the society everyone once knew now has become so intolerable that people are desperate to keep their loved ones safe and out of harms way. Since the population also have grown excessively "out of hand" thus exceeded the sustainable population limit, most people are without a job. Without a job it's hard to provide yourself and your family with the things you need to survive: A house to give you shelter and security, food and water to keep you from starving/dehydrating, wellness and disease preventative aids to keep you healthy and sane - when all of these things are completely removed or reduced to a certain extent, people's mindset changes. (Just think about it like this: When you go to long without sleep or food, what happens? Well you might get cranky, easily annoyed, in some cases of sleep deprivation you can also end up getting paranoid..) If then most or a lot of the population don't even have a proper or a home at all, there's a big chance they will have a hard time sleeping, considering the fact that they then are more vulnerable to end up being the victim of a crime of some sort. And then like mentioned above little sleep etc. equals paranoia, change of behavior and other mental and physical changes.
Now imagine what those people who never get to feel safe any longer feel like when they know that there are some people who's lifes are more appreciated than everyone else's - they have jobs, earn money to provide for their family, a house to live in, security installations (burglary preventative installations/alarms systems) - to sum it up these people don't get to experience the conditions the rest suffers from every single day, and to take it to an even higher level, many of these "rich people" were involved in the determination to start with this "The Purge" game (intentionally designed to reduce the population number). If you then ask yourself: "Who will most likely end up dead when The Purge takes place?" - The answer is of course the poor people - they won't have the advantages the "overheads" have. If people then have experienced the frenzy and mayhem The Purge causes, they will also begin to realize how big the chances are for them or their loves ones to end up "down in the dirt" covered by a gravestone with their names in scripted on it.
So, actually i think the strong minded ones will manage to stay on the good side, if they keep reminding themselves how important it is for them not to let their fear change them. But also there would be many who would be to traumatized by the whole setting, and thus end up actually committing crimes to get food/water for their family, a car for them to seek shelter in (or even better a house), you get the picture. If people knew this day would be the one of the few chances they'd get to change things for the better, even if that means committing crimes to get there, i actually think many people would take things far or far enough to achieve it.
As for those people who perform criminal acts/mess with people for the hell of it - that would not have been as widespread. Although people would find it difficult trying to stay alive, most would work hard to keep the little humanity that's left. If people lived in groups, chances are they would feel a little safer being together and all, which would then reduce the risk of them carrying out serious crimes.
--- As for me? I would never wan't to hurt anyone, not even under such circumstances - unless people would try to harm my family or friends of course then i would fight to keep us alive.

Haven't seen it, but it sounds very weak compared to The Return of the Archons

I haven't heard of the movie at all, but I can easily imagine how it would make a lot of people do things they wouldn't do otherwise. It seems posters in this thread think someone obeying the law do so because it's their nature and never because they simply don't wanna pay the price for the consequences. That's not true. Sure, there are people who will commit crime no matter what, but there are also people who CBB to get caught and do time. For some people the fear of consequences go a long way. "The consequences" can be both the law and revenge.
Actually most murders happen in close relations, especially for females. Statistically a woman's SO or ex is a much bigger threat to her than a stranger is.

I thought it was quite good. We simply don't know the future and what weirdness it might throw up. 3-22. Suggestive. I felt that there was definitely a class element to the film,as it it was partly designed to cull the "underclass":drug addicts, vagrants, the homeless, the infirm.....I think it was no coincidence that the group out hunting with great relish were well-to-do,well-dressed preppie types.

I don't think I want to see it, but here is my take....
Ever hear the saying, "Some people just need killing."
There are people who are jerks in life, and the law ultimately protects them.
Now, imagine a situation where once a year, you get 24 hours to do what you deem should be done without fear of the other person using the law or government to shield themselves.
I could see a lot of people taking advantage of such a situation but they otherwise wouldn't engage in criminal behavior.
I don't see such an arrangement keeping crime low or prosperity high...except that maybe in a few years, a lot of "undesirables" in society are "purged" from among the living by those sick of having them living among them. I know the take some people have on the film is that it's a "wealthy" family trying to survive 24 hours where people are out to get them.
