I really don't know how I feel about this latest development. If the test that they are proposing is created, will it not give people an excuse to abort babies that have a risk of developing autism once they are born?

What do you think?

Well, i think the study is important because it gives more clues on the causes of autism. After many years of not understanding anything, i am sure now that i inherit asperger's from my mother. So it would be interesting to see if this is related to us

Well I know I gave both my children autism. I believe my parents are & were somewhere on the spectrum. I have a sister with schizophrenia which is genetically connected to autism. However, I have also just found out that my husband's father was diagnosed with schizophrenia years ago as well as severe depression (again, genetically related to autism) and although he is NT, I have realised my husband does have a few autistic-like traits too.

So as both myself and my husband have siblings who have no signs or diagnoses of ASCs, perhaps in mine and my sister's cases, our mother had increased antibodies when she was carrying us and it triggered the genes or something. Then because I have the genes and my husband could be BAP or carrying some higher risk genes, our children didn't stand a chance. I was unwell during both pregnancies as well, with flu and kidney infections so I would have had raised antibodies that affected them too.

ASC = autistic spectrum condition

BAP = broad autism phenotype

Yep, the science on prenatal inflammation/T-cell & immune dysfunction and autism is starting to get settled.

But as with climate change and Evolution, there will always be deniers with a political agenda, in this case the neurodiversity/anti-cure contingent, in spite of the fact that the new scientific discoveries do not lead directly to a cure.

A solid treatment like lithium for bipolar based on the new science is about 5-10 years out while a complete cure is about 20 years from FDA approval.

Hi, i have heard a lot about people who are against a cure. Can you tell me a little more about their political agenda ? I have no clue but my my opinion is that if scientific research leads to a cure, i have nothing against it.

Note: Nothing in this post should be taken as endorsing theories that may or may not be implied or discussed in the underlying paper, or theories advanced by other commenters.

Quote:
Seven antigens were significantly more reactive to the blood of mothers of children with autism than to that of the control mothers. The study found that the mothers with antibodies that reacted with any one of these antigens, either individually or in combination with other antigens, were more than three times as likely to have a child with autism spectrum disorder.

If we're talking about three times the "generally accepted" 1/88 number, then I'd be interested to see the math behind selling this test. According to the article, they already sold the rights, but I don't see how this test makes money, even if it's dirt cheap.
