Since I needed to know their birthdates for an application, I now know exactly how old they were.

(Before, I thought my father was in his late 20ies because mom forgot the exacts or doesn't remember because she doesn't want to remember because he's been a neglecting, a maybe-drinking and a probably also ASD-hating ... well, nevermind.)

My mom was 23 years old when she had me in April. Young, I think.

As for my father's age; he was just a couple of weeks short of turning 31.

That does sees to make him at least some of an "old father". As I do see to be the only person with autism in the family, his age might have been a statistically relevant factor in that I was born autistic (who knows).

Mine were mid 20s.

In the 40s, 50s and 60s, nearly everybody smoked, indoors and out and in the car with the windows rolled up - America was awash in a cloud of cigarette smoke and in general, the population was much healthier than they are today. You're in more danger from the modified foods you eat than you've ever been from secondhand smoke.

That's true, a lot more modified processed foods now, but my mother smoked in the car with the windows rolled up and I know I was short of breath because the nuns at school used to get on my case for taking too many breaths in mid sentence when reading out loud.

But that doesn't fit with the facts- life expectancy has gone up an awful lot since 1940 or even 1960.

According to http://demog.berkeley.edu/~andrew/1918/figure2.html :

1940: 60.8 males, 65.2 females
1950: 1950, 65.6, 71.1
1960: 66.6, 73.1
1990: 71.8, 78.8
1998: 73.8, 79.5

This website shows similar figures: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0005148.html

Unless you contend that reduced accidents and murders counter out the earlier natural deaths (which to me seems unlikely because natural deaths far outweigh accidents and murders) then it would seem the population of the USA is getting healthier.

http://www.csdp.org/research/1238.pdf finds that smoking still leads to more deaths than poor diet and lack of exercise...

Interesting responses so far. I hope more of you chime in on this!

My older brother who is 10 years older than me doesn't have autism ( he has a different father)

My younger sister on the other hand is 8 years younger than me and she has it noticeably more severe than I do ( also has a different father than me)

Mom was 22, dad was 24. Not too young, but young.

My mum was 25, my dad was 27.

My mum never smoked or drank whilst pregnant.

I was born 3 days late and there was no birth complications.

My mum didn't have strong drugs to help her give birth. I was born naturally as well.

I was a healthy baby when I was born, weighed around 7 pounds.

So I believe that it was just bad luck that caused my ASD. Also I'm the only one with a disability in my family.

They were both 17. Well, my mom turned 18 two weeks before I was born.

i thought older parents were more at risk of having a child with downs syndrome, as what it says everywhere i read about it.

my mum was 38 when she had me, but was even older when she had my sister but she turned out nt.
