I can't remember the last time laughed because I found something funny.
Others I meet laugh frequently when amused, even over things that I wouldn't so much as smirk at.

I sometimes pretend to laugh to save someone the discomfort of having their joke die but that's it.

Even when I find something very funny I don't do much more than smile.

Anyone else experience this?

I do laugh a lot, I remember a girl at school even told me in a critical way that I laugh at too many things. But I think I use laughter as a method to be able to cope with things a little more, after all, they say laughing can fight feelings of stress, so that's what I do. But it's still wrong. And if people say ''maybe they think you're laughing at them'', then that's like the pot calling the kettle back because I'm aware that nobody likes being laughed at but don't respect that when it comes to them laughing at me in public when I'm not doing a thing to make them laugh. Ohh, I guess it's a world I will never know.

Anyway sorry to go off track. Sometimes I get embarrassed to laugh, like if someone farts I get totally embarrassed whilst others grin or give some sort of reaction (not everyone does though). Other things like that get me too embarrassed to laugh.

Me too. I can't have an informal conversation and not to smile or laugh

In my classmate's words: "Why do you laugh at bells?".

OP - Have you always behaved like this or is it a more recent thing?

I look for things that might make me laugh, though they're hard to find.
I also try to spin my troubles in such a way as to laugh at them rather than cry at them.

But I don't often vocally laugh or for very long. If someone else is around, I tend to heighten my emotional expression a little,
since I'm trying to communicate/get myself across to another person effectively,
project my sensibility/perspective (outward) rather than keep it to myself (inward)-which is what I do when alone.

If anything, I laugh too much. Especially at things that are completely immature. I know that they really aren't that funny, but I find myself laughing at them anyways, sometimes to a point where I can't quit and have to leave the room for a while to calm down.

Most things that other people seem to find funny just aren't. On the other hand, I tend to involuntarily grin when saying (or thinking about) stuff that isn't funny at all, i.e. when talking about childhood abuse in therapy.

Likely just a way of coping with the anxiety related to the topic. People often grin involuntarily when confronted with a fact that's personally difficult to deal with.

Well, the box of tissues on my therapist's table seems to suggest that the expected reaction is that people start to cry when talking about such things.

In the described situation the laughing is often a way of controlling the crying, i.e. avoid crying.

Hence the proverb: "We laugh, because if we didn't laugh, we'd cry."

I also laugh to dispel tension, fill in an awkward pause, and/or to acknowledge the absurdity of situation.
Example: I laugh a little when dramatic tension/suspense-building in a fictional story gets "too much",
esp. during cliffhanger moments on tv shows, when the music becomes overly dramatic.

I never cry. I'd like to be able to, but most I can manage is a tear or two in my eye corners.
