Is it true that aspergers is linked to you're seratonin level just like depression is? i think i read that in an article a long time ago. if so it would explian every disorder ive ever had.it seems like everything is linked to this one chemical.I have been diagnosed with pdd but that was before doctors really started using aspergers as a diagnoses. i am also a hoarder, hypotonic, and i used to have food allergies. if its ever possible to regulate this within our bodies more efficiently than medical science can now do does that mean we will eventually be able to get rid of our autistic tendencies?

I think you must be right in part. My theory, and sophist can correct parts where I am wrong, is that nuerons are smaller, and there are more packed in minicolumns. If correct, this probably means autistics need more seratonin, and I guess most diets come up short. Taking more may help, and even mitigate some autistic tendencies, but that isn't everything.

BTW this DOES help explain some stims, studying, depression, etc... There are a lot of things it doesn't begin to explain.

It's part of the story, but far from the whole story. I was on SSRI's over the course of three years. They didn't help my OCD whatsoever. I was diagnosed with Asperger's after being on the SSRI's for two years, so obviously, the symptoms from that didn't abate, either...

Which SSRI's did you take?

I was on Zoloft for about a year, but then it was making me sooo tired that I switched to Lexapro. I was only on that for about six months because it made me even more anxious. So, I went back on Zoloft. I was up to 250 mg because I had started CBT. Didn't do anything. Also made me very tired. Then, last fall, I switched to Prozac, 40 mg. Also didn't do anything but make me tired. Now I'm not on any. Best decision ever. I actually can get my homework done without falling asleep! Imagine that! :D The only psychiatric medications I'm on now are Lamictal (100 mg) for my Asperger's mood swings and Klonopin as needed (I have both 0.125 and 0.5 mg). I rarely take the Klonopin, though. Talk about something that knocks you out! I can't function while on Klonopin, so I have to be REALLY bad, in order to take them. It's a lose-lose with the Klonopin, though. I either can't function because of anxiety or I can't function because of the fatigue.
