Do you sometimes say what you did not say?

Example:

Lets say you said "I did not tell him that he was being an ass." and then people are like "No that would be bad if you say that."

Is it best to say what you didn't say or say what you did say?

hmm not really, but saying "I did not tell him that he was being an ass. It should have been obvious!" might be funny under the right circumstances if said with a bit of sarcasm.
