Has anyone tried talking to someone over your computers even though you're in the same room? Is it easier for you to do that than talking?

I've done this a few times with a friend. We were sitting in the living room on our laptops and we started instant messaging each other. We were having long conversations without talking even though I was sitting practically right next to her.

Long verbal conversations in which I need to express myself is really hard for some reason. I can't collect and organize my thoughts like I can when typing.

Just wondering if anyone else does this for similar reasons.

I talk to people in the same room by writing down on paper.
Less in familiar settings as family but when the setting is unknown and thus causing overload I write down when something needs to be said, like in therapy I am often mute as I have to take the train to get there which is causing overload.
I have some recovery time but it is not enough and then writing is the better option, otherwise I would not be able to communicate at all and it would be pointless going there.
Writing helps me to find back speech as well.

Sure.

I have mild speech problems (diagnosed with aphasia as well as Aspergers). I find text communication to be significantly easier than attempting spontaneous speech.

Prepared speech is much easier. I believe talking about a special interest falls into the "prepared speech" category. Anything that has previously been converted into words is easier.

I have never been considered non-verbal.

My fingers are big and my phone's keyboard is small (Internet is slow and sometimes doesn't work, so there is not my first choice). Plus other people have spelling horrors and I do not understand what they wrote.
However I prefer texting to speaking.

LOL... well... i worked in an office once with a bunch of programmers and me all sharing one big room... people at your elbow would be pm'ing you and sending you emails instead of just turning around and saying something... it was pretty funny. i was working in health care before that and people are very social comparatively so it was quite a contrast.

i am comfortable with it, although i hate PMs because they feel intrusive, i prefer email.

however i think by and large most NTs would find it pretty strange.

I'm far from being non-verbal. There have only been a hand full of times in my life where I could not talk even if I wanted to.

It's just much easier and much more comfortable for me to communicate through text vs speaking.

Yes, I prefer doing this. However, people give me a hard time about it. They don't understand why I just don't talk.

It would have felt weird, if not downright embarrassing, to IM someone in the same room, unless we were excluding someone.

I have sent SMS to someone in the same room though lol. it was pretty silly but fun, but it's not something I usually do or would do. I just did it to kid around and because I liked my ringtone.

On another site someone once said they had a dream that all the members lived in the same building, and that they were in their rooms talking to each other on the computer. Sounded good to me!
