Help! I appear to be stuck between two special interests and don't have a clue what to do about it!
So here's what happened- I've had a special interest based on the tv show Once Upon a time since season two started in the UK about April time. My interest was waining as they do around two weeks ago and at the same time I had started to think a lot about my old interest in the tv show The Sarah Jane Adventures and the character I created based on the series. I've been on and off thinking about that series and my character but I still have thoughts about my past interest and it makes me feel sad! I don't know what I'm supposed to do or supposed to think, it's so confusing and I really need some advice on how to cope with this madness!
Please help!

I will watch your thread as I am struggling with a similar issue myself. I am torn between researching species of shark (and wanting to make clay models of all species of shark both living and extinct) and wanting to indulge my older love of Tapestry and Cross stitch.

Thus far I am getting around it by watching shark related movies (I have nearly 25 shark themed films now :D :D) and documentaries (I have collected some of those as well) whilst I do my stitching.

I also love Abbey from NCIS. I am going to get my hair coloured and cut today so that I have the option of adopting a more gothic look if I want to. Abbey is cool. Although I am tempted to go for bright red instead of very dark...I'll probably go with the dark though. But again I can watch NCIS whilst I am stitching as I have it on as background noise.

What my brain can't do is read up on species of shark and stitch at the same time so I can't always make up my mind which love I want to pursue. The result is I end up pursuing neither of them.

Gah...

What exactly is the problem?

You like one current show, but also have fanfiction daydreams about another earlier show?

So?

So-watch both of them.

Your made up character could make cameos in both shows-in your mind.

Who knows- I used to fantasize that the Baltimore detectives in Homocide would team up with the New York dectives in Law and Order, and soon after I thought that-they really did start combining the casts of the two TV series in certain episodes.

I used to have this problem with special interests, myself....I worried that if I became interested in something else, I was neglecting the movie/characters that I had been previously interested in. Then when I got older, I discovered from looking at fanfiction/fanart archives that lots of people have several interests/are in several different fandoms at the same time, and that made me feel better about acquiring multiple special interests. :D I've had several interests in the past that wane and then return later, and some that are sort of "in the background."

You can certainly have more than one interest at a time. Sometimes you might be more on one than the other. That is fine. And if one happens to fade out that is perfectly fine too. It's all good. Just enjoy them. Trust me, there is no special interest police. :D

These may or may not be "special" interests, but I have a lot of interests that conflict due to my lack of time management skills and procrastination of actual work and it's bothering me. Don't know how to help you, other than schedule out time for each which is far easier said than done.

You could take turns doing each on a different day. Like on Monday you spend time on one, on Tuesday on another and so forth.

The OP's belief that she can only be interested in one thing at a time seems to be the problem.

I have a similar problem but its more that I am indecisive about which interest I want to pursue and when than it being about thinking you can't have more than one interest at a time. I don't know about the OP but I have loads of them but tend to focus on only one, somewhat obsessively, at a time meaning the others fade into the background for months on end whilst my main interest takes over. Occasionally however, my brain seems to focus on two rather than just one and thats when I end up getting a bit confused.

As I like to go into a high level of focus when working on my fascinations/hobbies I don't like to keep changing from one task to another. This means that if I have an interest in two hobbies running simultaneously I don't like switching quickly between one or the other. I can't get my brain to change its focus easily and that is one reason why I hate being interrupted by people wanting to chitty chat when I am working on things and I was not expecting to socialise right then. So I end up with a dilema. I want to read about sharks and get my indexing system for them started/organised but I also want to stitch as well. I can't do both activities at the same time and decision making is not my strong suit lol.

Such is life.
