What do people on the autism spectrum use as helpful hints to remembering names easily? I say that the best way to remember a person's name quickly is to associate it with a rhyme or similar name. This is also one of the important parts of social skills.

Even if I remember a name there is no guarantee I'll remember the face that goes with it, but I can see how mnemonics can help.

When people give me their names, I usually tell them "You'll probably have to tell me that several times before it sticks."

The confusion of socializing in the moment almost always knocks it right out of my short term memory.

By the time I leave the room, I've often forgotten it, or have it confused with another similar name and can't remember which one is the correct one.

If I do remember it and I see them again soon, I repeat it as soon as I see them: "So-and-so, right?"

I just remember them. Names are easy. It's faces that are hard.

I have grapheme-colour synaesthesia and am highly visually orientated (hence faces are easy but names are hard). If I remember to in the moment, I visualise the person's name as soon as they say it, and make sure I pay attention to the colours. I place the coloured image somewhere near their face and make it quite large.

If I don't do that straight away, I will most likely forget the name.

Sometimes I associate the name with something else (like Anna would be "banana") and visualise that object somewhere on the person. The key is to make the association between the person and the image quite silly/memorable.

^ for me "anna" would be a piece of vanilla colored and scented ribbon.

OP, I repeat the person's name out loud purposely and then I get an image for them filed away.

I don't have a problem remembering faces or names. I just remember it without having to think about it.

This.

My brain is already in overdrive when someone is being inroduced to me. Their name will probably make no impression on my mind as it races in one ear and out the other.

I won't realise that I have completely failed to listen to their name until later, when my mind is working at a slower, more efficient rate.

I remember names by reference. If I meet somebody at the grocery story for the first time, the scene at the store becomes the reference I remember them by. I see there face, and if I can remember it, the scene from the store runs through my head, and I pull the name out of the scene.

A lot of times I never got their name to begin with. In those cases, the name becomes, "that person I met at the store."

I don't have a thing to remember people's names. Even if I knew a trick to remember a person's name, there's no guarantee that I'd be able to match it up to their face. There are certain people I've dealt with over respective periods of years whose names I have not known.

There is one thing that seems to help: If I knew their name before meeting them in person I am more likely to remember it. If I spoke to them on a website or through email, I'll remember their name, or if it's used repeatedly in interaction. Otherwise, I don't.

But even when I do know someone's name, I still don't call them by it. It is excruciatingly difficult to do, even if I do know it. The only time I will say someone's name directly to them is if I absolutely have to get their attention and there is no other way to do it. To avoid saying someone's name I will walk a very long distance to get close to them so they realize that I need to talk to them. I am amazed at the fact that other people address each other by name.

My thing is using lots of pronouns. Names aren't interesting or useful enough to remember.

I usually don't remember. My NT DH doesn't remember either. We just say "Hi! How are you?" if someone looks familiar. :D Occasionally that someone might be a complete stranger who look like people we've met, but it doesn't hurt to say hi to them.

In that aspect I'm so glad to be an adult in North America, everyone is my equal. As a kid who grew up in China, we're supposed to call everyone their proper names and titles, like elder paternal uncle Wu, teacher Lee, great maternal aunt Hsia...etc. I often called people wrong names. Like calling my mom's best friend's husband elder maternal uncle. :D This extend to all your parents friends and co-workers, though the rules are not fixed. Like for all the females you call them maternal aunt, you don't need to know their age. For all the males you call them elder or younger paternal uncles, you need to find out their age compared to your dad's. You also have to remember who's older than who among your relatives and peers. If a kid is born a few hours earlier than you on the same day, you gotta call him elder brother.
