As far as I understand the situation (and I'm sure others will clarify if my interpretation is amiss) DSMV applies an overarching set of diagnostics which all fall under the category of ASDs. The various related sub-quirks that are found in (what used to be regarded as) subcategories of ASD are now filed away under categories such as 'communication impairment' or 'restricted behaviour'. Which is to say that diagnosis is now somewhat more nuanced, if anything.
It doesn't, again, as far as I understand this shift in categories, annul pre-existing diagnoses such as Asperger Syndrome, so I suppose the AS diagnosis and similar subcategories of ASD are now regarded as outdated but valid due to the prevailing diagnostic criteria pertaining at the time the label was applied.
Does that make sense?
