I am wondering something about intuition.
Like many autistic people I lack empathy.
But I have noticed that I can pick up a sense
of knowing how people feel about me on
discussion forums. Like there was someone
I sensed a feeling of hostility from. But not
anything tangible in what he was posting.
Then he finally "showed his true colors" and bullied
me. So it turns out I was correct in my assessment
of him. I just do not understand how I picked up
on it ahead of time.

I lack an empathy but I have an excellent intuition. I can "sense" if a person likes or dislikes me after very little time even if they try to hide it. I can also sense some characterists of people even if they are not explicit. One example is my writing class teacher: I knew she was a feminist even before she openly said that, because I had "felt" it.
I have an excellent intuition and I rely on it a lot to "study" people and know what I can expect from them. I have issues with empathy, in the sense I can't understand what they are feeling.
I rely on my intuition a lot. No wonder I score as an INFP in most Myers-Briggs tests.

Intuition is really just you getting knowledge from your subconscious processes. Your "gut" feelings on a situation. Most all of them can be analytically derived by observation and analysis.

I have a sense of intuition when I'm the OBSERVER of a situation. As a participant, I don't pick up on things as well, and if I do, I don't often know what to do with the information.

I think you are probably picking up subtle clues and processing them subconsciously. Because you may not be used to picking up on subtle clues away from discussion forums you may think you can't pick up on them, but possibly something in the wording or tone of the person's posts set off a red flag for you and you filed it under intuition instead of picking up on something. After being told you lack empathy altogether and that you can't pick up on clues, intuition seems a good choice to call it when you actually do pick up on clues. :)

I've noticed this, too. Familiarity in particular changes things.

Thank you for the explanations.
I have a much better perspective now regarding this.

I have been told that something like 80% of communication is non-verbal. So I try to respect the efforts of my subconscious to alert me via intuition, to what other people are *really* communicating.

Though I find this can be done quite readily in-person (body language, etc.), sometimes I can also do it by "reading" the tone of someone's writing. In the past I have moderated boards like this one, and it was interesting to note how well a new person's initial few posts, though innocently worded, could foreshadow future negative ones.

considering i have premonitions id say my intuition is not just my subconscious picking up on subtleties. i have empathy but my logical mind is stronger. if you intuitively feel you are intuitive, id say you are.
