Hi there, new to this forum and i realise the topic is quiet old now (3 months) but have to put my two cents in. Im a Australian Police Officer, have been for the last 3 years and diagnosed with aspergers for the same duration. Yes its not something you make noticeable in the psych test but i didn't feel like it affected my ability to know what is right and wrong or to understand the legal process so there was no harm in not telling them.

Its been great for my aspergers actually, it provides me with that structural routine i love so much, yes i interact with strangers but its not on a personal level, i am there only to tell them right from wrong and i have policies and procedures to follow, its not like walking into a bar or crowded venue with no set rules (which i can't stand). As soon as i put that uniform on it gives me a sense of confidence and allows me to talk and do things i can't do with it off, my logical reasoning and attention to the smallest details that usually annoys and frustrates my partner is very helpful, so is my desensitivity towards certain crimes, allowing me to look past the emotion and to the facts.

I could ramble on all day about it, but in truth there is a downfall. I can't retain any friendships, never have, which makes it lonely and its not a good job to be lonely in. Plus when i take off the uniform, i feel a massive gap between my personal and professional life, i can't act, talk or walk the way i do in uniform off duty, i am a police officer 24/7 but i crawl back into my shell the moment i finish work. Cant even ask for a measly discount at a coffee store haha

In short it is possible, if you look at your weaknesses with aspergers (the social side of things) but realise the job whilst social is very structured and routine, i think any aspergers person could make a great if not greater police officer with their unique set of skills and perception that other ego driven cops sometimes lack.

Cheers guys
