A facebook page trying to gather support for the first Aspie contestant on the show Survivor.
I thought some of the WP folks might want to go check this out and wave a hello.

That terrible show is still on? There is nothing redeeming about survivor.

The orginal reality show, While it would be neat to see I have to wonder whats the odds are of an aspie leaving the show a millionare less taxes. That show is just one big long messy social experiment.

From what I've seen of the people on those stupid reality TV shows, that poor aspie is going to be eaten alive.

I'm not a fan of the show, I watched one episode yrs ago when a hometown local was on there. I was sufficiently embarrassed by this nitwit "representing" *cough cough our town I gave up. That being said, the Aspie wanting to go on the show, hell yeah. I think it would do wonders for this kid and see it as a positive all the way around.

I haven't seen much of the show, but I've definitely watched Total Drama, (it parodies Survivor).

I also know that Scott is a living, breathing parody of Russell Hantz.

I'll just leave this here, (don't worry, it's nothing from the current season):

I will not watch that.

That Aspie will either do very well (becaue s/he will have a boatload of skills and stay the f**k out of the social dramas that are 99.7% of what that stupid show is about)...

...or get eaten alive in the stupid social dramas that are 99.7% of what that stupid show is about.

Personally, I hope this Aspie who thinks s/he needs to indulge and show off his/her fascination with survivalism (and possibly be a representative for Aspiekind of global TV) would come hang out on SurvivalistBoards (where, for the record, most of us don't enjoy Survivor or Doomsday Preppers either) and tend to his/her own life instead.

Probably one more media circle-jerk-- like the Aspie kid on Parenthood-- that I will have to explain to people does not represent me, my family, or my life.

Well, let me know if the poor fool makes it on the show. I guess I WILL watch...

...if only so I know what stereotypes I am going to be put up against this time.   8O

Thats what I was thinking aswell,

BuyerBeware, the problem with being skilled on that show from what I understand fron the 3 episodes I have seen is the skilled person becomes the tribes provider is voted off near the end when they go from an asset to a liabillity from an adversaries' point of view, same is Weakest Link when the intelligent people are used to bank the money in the pot and then deemed the weakest link a round or two before the final, for this I think the aspie would likely last well past the first elimination when the worst of the worst get cut.

The trick and profile of player most of these team game/reality shows tend to favor is to be average in overall performance and be able to fly under the proverbal radar while playing a very complicated social game, I just don't see any aspie fitting what I wrote (in fact its really the oppisite if the diagnostic criteria), unless obsessing over game shows is a special intrest and the aspie in question is a very good actor. Still I think an aspie would make a better coach then a player at this game.

I personally like Survivor. It’s actually the only network TV show I have watched during the past 10 or so years.

I find two aspects interesting. First, it’s a game with a lot of strategy. It’s like a huge game of chess, where players need to consider various possible “moves”, thinking two, three, four moves ahead. Second, it’s fascinating watching the social element.

Yes, I agree that an Aspie will get eaten alive.

Yes--except not because of the people on those shows, but because of the producers. Reality shows are usually highly manipulated, so if your Aspie is anything less than a perfect human being, their flaws will be exaggerated; they may be cast as stupid or annoying. If they're particularly intelligent, they may be shown as a narcissistic genius with no common sense. On the other hand, they could be used as a "poor disabled person" for the more aggressive people on the cast to pick on, to show these people's aggressive, shrewd, or socially manipulative nature.

There have been a few Aspies on reality shows before. Abz Love on "Celebrity Big Brother" did rather well, but was already an actor and an extrovert who had been able to hide his AS for years, so he had advantages most of us don't have. Heather Kuzmich on "America's Top Model" was cast as the person that the "mean girls" picked on; from what I understand, the situation was exaggerated, and she wasn't actually bullied more than anyone else. She didn't win, but she did become a professional model.

As far as going on reality TV shows goes--I think most of us would hate it. I think we would hate being manipulated and misrepresented, and a single meltdown or shutdown would immediately cause the producers to give us the role of "the crazy person". Additionally, since many of us are introverts, we would be unable to survive in a place where there is no privacy--either from the cameras or from the other participants.

To actually survive on, and somewhat enjoy, being a reality TV show contestant, one would have to be an extrovert with an extreme degree of emotional stability, be willing to accept the reality of repeated embarrassment, and enjoy "putting on a show"--probably an act or an exaggeration--for the audience. To be successful, you would also need a high degree of social savvy, the ability to manipulate and charm others, diplomacy, reasonably good leadership skills, and good looks. On some shows, you would also need athleticism.

It would be a very unusual Aspie who would enjoy that, but (see above) it has happened.

could be, we never were offered MTV in Canada until recently and even then it is a watered down verson.

I think honestly the best route for an aspie to go is the sympathy route, if people feel bad for you they will be less likely to vote you off the island, they may end up having "if I can't win I want you to win" type of thoughts. This type of play on international TV would be harmful for the ASD community as a whole though, however the point is to do whatever you have to win order to win a million less taxes. Rudy comes to mind, a vetrean in his 70-80s and no one wanted to vote him off becouse of the sympathy and respect they had for him even though he was physically unable to really do the challanges, always needing help etc.

Yeah, no thanks, and no pity. I've had enough of that in my lifetime; I certainly don't need it on national TV. Can you imagine? Always being known as that poor Aspie from Survivor...
