I just got my diagnosis yesterday. The psychotherapist I've been seeing says that there's "no doubt" that I'm on the spectrum. I had told her that I feel like I'm either just barely on the spectrum or just barely off of it. She says I may actually be moderately affected by it, but that I seem to have a high level of intelligence, which may have helped me figure out ways to cope with the world (I mentioned the example of how I had taught myself how to console people).

And to think: After my first session I was convinced that I wasn't "autistic enough" to qualify for a diagnosis. 8O

She also diagnosed me with an anxiety disorder (anxiety NOS). She says I have some OCD and ADHD traits, but not enough for a diagnosis of either of those, and that those traits may be because of the autism.

The process took several hours spread over two sessions. I also provided her with plenty of information on my family background, issues I've pinpointed myself, things others have pointed out to me, information on my job performance at work, and so on, which probably helped. The next step will be social skills training, followed by some work on executive function issues.

It hasn't quite sunk in that I'm actually on the spectrum, but it's good to have an answer.

Congrats! It is always a relief to get an explanation to a "gordian knot".

FishStickNick - you're in good company.

I could have cut and paste everything you said in your inital post and changed your name for mine as my diagnosis experience was essentially identical to yours.

Congratulations. This is a major moment in your life, take the proper time to absorb it. You might be going through some very intense emotions. They are ok and normal, embrace them.
