Finally found out why i have trouble reading

today, i found out why i could never read and why it was always painful, and how its linked to Autism.

When i read, its hard to see all the letters because its like the words are vibrating and it hurts a lot.

i was watching a Temple Grandin lecture and she was talking about Sensory Difficulties, and then she mentioned Visual sensitivities can have trouble reading because its like the words are jumping, and she showed a video simulation and i felt so much relief finally knowing why i cant read very well and for very long.

I downloaded a system on my computer a few days ago that can allow me to copy paste articles (mostly crazy long ones that are from WP) and it helps me focus on what I'm reading, and its also easier to visualize in my head when its being said to me.

does anyone else have this?

You should post a like to the program you found, it might be worth a try. I can't read well of for long I think for a number of reasons, a strong special interest as an exception sometimes.

Yes. For reading, I know that some people use colored overlays (tinted plastic sheets) for that. If you google "tinted plastic reading sheets" you can see what I'm talking about.

Years ago, I found a place and was tested for "scotopic sensitivity syndrome" and had some colored lenses made which helped. SSS isn't not an official medical thing (in the 90's -- maybe it is, now), though, and the testing was ridiculously expensive.

I read much better with reading glasses and stimulant medication. Mine is more of a processing issue though. I see words fine. Years ago because reading was so stressful I used to get a lot of blurred lines when I kept trying to read.

Apple is onto something. It's called Irelns syndrome now and you can get diagnosed and your own special tinted lenses. Plus you can buy those plastic sheets from their website.

the colors hurt for a bit usually indeed; i have a lot of trouble with the standard black-on-white writings.
newspapers i have no problem with since they are on recycled paper, that has a yellow tint.

for my computer, i use F.lux to change my screens hue to a warmer tint, which is easy on the eyes. i have basically added a bit of yellow in every color the videocard gets.

if i want to read regular white paper, i put on my sunglasses (i have polaroids), which also help. i might get tested for SSS too, some time, but i dont have either time or money for that as it stands

Anyone here start reading in books with very large print, but as you got a bit older the school began giving you books with smaller print?

Apparently I never made the adjustment. I still need larger print to read comfortably, for what little amount of time I can read without burning out. Seems to be a concentration thing, where the larger print is easier for me to deal with when reading.

I'm just glad you can sometimes find large print versions of books I want.
