I was having a conversation with a colleague of mine last week about feelings, and I said about how stressed I get over various things, but too afraid to even try anti-depressants. She suggested I buy something called RESCUE remedy from the supermarket or a chemist, what you put on your tongue, and it apparently is supposed to help ease feelings of stress and those racing thoughts you get that go round and round in your mind. I thought it might be worth a try, so I went to the supermarket today and picked up one. I have tried it, but I'm not sure if it's working or not, or if it will work. I do feel a little calmer than usual over things that would usually make me overwhelmed, but I'm not sure if it might be because I'm in a good mood at the moment or something. I'm hoping it will ease the stress I get, or to help stop thoughts from keep going round and round in my head. I do feel like my mind is a little clearer, and I can calmly think a bit more about important things instead of obsessing over things I shouldn't. So I am hoping that they are beginning to work.

I just hope I don't become immune to them in time and then settle back into my old ways. I still feel irritable and stressed because that will never be cured completely as it is part of the way I am, but I think it is taking the edge off the stress a bit and I'm hoping it might make me feel relaxed in various situations, like at work or in shops, etc. It may even make me be more of a joy to be around. I don't know if they sell this in other countries or not, but it does in the UK, and it is pretty good stuff, with no side effects. Just thought I'd share it and see if anybody else has tried this or anything similar.

Interesting. Let us know how that works out. I've never heard of the stuff before, but I did look it up and it's supposedly all natural, so that's appealing.

I've found Chamomile capsules to be very helpful. I had several very stressful tasks to deal with today and I took two of those as soon as I got up this morning, or I'd have never gotten through it all (meaning I'd have been so keyed up I would never have left the house).

You can drink the chamomile in tea, but it has to be very strong, like four tea bags per cup. I'm told it's the herbal equivalent of taking Xanax.

Rescue is an overall stess reducing remedy from Bachs Flower remedies. They are made a special way, that doesn´t go well with my ideas about sense and science, but they work. I tried it myself for a period.
Alternative therapists use Bachs. They have to be trained in the use of it.
There is a number of essences from different herbs and flowers, and the idea is to test, what the client needs...usually a combination of 3-4 sorts. The client reads a few very short remarks about the feelings tested, and then she goes home and take some of the mixture every day for a couple of weeks, - and the go for a new test, if it hasn´t helped.
I used them during some body-mind courses.

My mum used to buy this. I never noticed any effect from it but it tastes nice. I suspect placebo. There are certainly no placebo controlled trials, I doubt such a trial would be possible.

Still, placebo is good medicine.

Yeah, like how lies make good truths (well, I guess they sometimes do).

It's a homeopathic flower remedy. It may work for you, who knows. I've taken a few homeopathic remedies that worked for me before, but that might have been coincidence. I don't know if homeopathy really works or not. It can't hurt though, that's one thing for sure.

I'm pretty sure you won't find a scientific basis for it. It is available in Australia, and my Mum always keeps suggesting it for everything. I don't mind a placebo for making a kid feel better if they have an 'ouchie'.
Having said that, I used it on my nipples when I breastfed. One drop either side after the baby was done. It really seemed to work, and I knew it could not harm baby. If that was placebo, I don't mind, a long as the pain went. I recommended it to my friend, she says "I swear by that stuff".
Hardly scientific evidence, but you never know, there might be an undiscovered explanation.
Or not.

I keep a vile of Bach Rescue Remedy tincture, in my pocket, on days when I am having to meet new clients or similar, possible stress inducing events. It works really well for me! I've been using it, on an as-needed basis, for approx 3 yrs.

I used to get Hayfever so bad I would consume whole boxes of Hayfever tablets in a desperate attempt to stop streams of snot flowing from my nose.
Then one year I was visiting my Father whose girlfriend made me a Bachs Flower remedy for Hayfever, and you know what, symptoms just reduced and reduced so that now I might get the occasional sneeze and itchy eyes, but thats about it.

As for being a Placebo, dont you have to believe something will work for a placebo to actually work?
I certainly didnt think Bachs flower remedy could possibly work and only took it to be nice to my Dads Girlfriend.

its not a placebo effect for everyone as they use it on animals as well who cannot have the placebo effect.

sister has used it before for anxiety and it helped her, might get some as well as am only on six mg of diazepam a day.

I've got some rescue remedy chewing gum.

I can't remember why I bought it now or even if it worked.

I might give it a go next time I have a touch of nerves, to see if it works.

I'll keep you posted.

Strong chamomile tea is really calming for some people, but its efficiency depends on people. Like most herbal remedies it mainly makes me sleep, but that is still something. Note that most of the cheap "chamomile" herbal teas you will find is not actually chamomile but matricaria (matricaria reticulata). True (chamaeleum nobile), also called "noble" or "roman" chamomile, is vastly more efficient as a herbal remedy in my opinion. They are easy to tell apart when you drink the tea ; noble chamomile has a much stronger, bitterer and more "herbal" taste. It is also slightly more expensive unfortunately.

Valerian is the other calming plant I find useful. And if you want natural help you should look at Kava Kava too. It is something slightly different but I have found it very useful.

From my experience and my personal research I believe Bach's flowers to be just an expensive placebo with no expérimental, biochemical or ethnobotanical basis. In other words I think it is just a fancy theory some guy invented one day, he managed to help people with it because he was a good talker and probably a good doctor and a good man overall. But it's just my opinion. The only metric to judge a therapy or drug should be whether it works or not. If it works with you, use it!

There's a photo in the members only picture thread. It's a bit pixelish though. I'll take another tomorrow in the daylight.

I am feeling better too. Thanks.

If alternative meds work for you, then praise God.

But for those of us with extreme GAD and depression, there is noting like Xanax and Effexor. I know, I know ... I hate taking meds, too. But God has given to the world two kinds of medicines: natural remedies which he made directly, and those remedies developed though a remarkable divine gift given to man, the wisdom of pharmaceutical understanding.

I need the latter kind of medication to help me. There is nothing immoral or worse about using pharmaceuticals. God gave to men the wisdom to develop medicines and cures. We should thank Him for these gifts and not be afraid to try them if all else fails.
