Hello, WrongPlanet.

I took Adderall for the first time yesterday, 20 mg, and I was curious if the effects that I felt were normal for people with ADHD, or for people on the spectrum.

I felt really lite; the only way I can describe it was like I was floating on a cloud. I also felt more need to socialise, and I wanted to talk, but I was not hyperactive.
Not to mention that I had an intense want to get things done, and what really got me was the fact that for once, ever since I can remember, I could actually think about only one thought in my head. The best analogy I can think of is that my mind was black, and the only thing I thought about was something I wanted to think about.

Is this a typical reaction to Adderall for people with undiagnosed ADHD, and/or is it (also) a 'normal' reaction for people on the spectrum as well?

If needed to know, I am diagnosed with AS.

Thanks in advance. :)

Jag älskar din ikon och underskrift. :) lol

I have a prescription for adderall (20 mg also), and your reaction is typical of humans in general. Adderall is amphetamine, so that's just what being on amphetamine is like.

Tack! :) Jag talar lite svenska.

Thanks for your response, again. Is that a good thing that it was a normal reaction?

I've never taken Adderall, but I have taken other amphetamines and they never affected me like that. I just felt extremely tense and anxious - thus the term 'wired'. I don't recall how they may have affected my concentration, this was long before I was diagnosed, so I wasn't thinking about that, but I do recall the experiences were never particularly pleasant, so I just started avoiding any kind of pharma-stimulant. Years later, when I started working out, I used an energy supplement drink for a short period with ephedra and it had a similar effect - made me so tense I just wanted to smash things, so I stopped using the stuff. I'd love to be able to take meds for ADHD, if they would help me focus and concentrate, but I don't want a stimulant because they've always made me feel horrible. I have so much anxiety already, I can't stand having something that might turn that up to 11. :shaking: :bounce: :shaking:

How much did you take? The higher the dose, the more negative effects become possible. Also, it's likely that you simply don't react well to stimulants. I think if you're looking for an ADHD med, I would recommend concerta. I think it's a stimulant, but it's not at all like adderall. In low doses, it doesn't give the "wired" feeling. I used to take it, and stopped simply because it made me a robot and I hated it. It's really the ultimate ADHD med imo. On concerta, one becomes a working machine. Working is the only thing possible, and you get a lot done. It does make autistic symptoms increase ten fold though. I couldn't talk to anyone even if I tried, and I couldn't even fake facial expressions or vocal tone... it was terrible. But god, the years I was on concerta were the only years in which I have been a straight A student.

Also, future reference to anyone with questions about drugs like adderall and concerta (or really any psychoactive at all), read the experience vaults on erowid. Wonderfully useful stuff.

The first time I took Adderall I felt my brain and my voice line up seamlessly. My thoughts were clear and organised, and I wasn't bothered by being in a room full of noisy people. I think I have ADD, anyway. All of my life I've been a procrastinator, never finishing projects, etc. Yeah, I can hyperfocus on something for a while, but then when I stop I'm already moving on to something else. I don't know if taking amphetamines is really the best course of action, but they certainly do help as long as you don't take them on a daily basis.

I've only ever taken Ritalin on prescription and my experience is the same as yours though there was some hyperactivity/mania. The latter suggests that stimulant medication is not ideal for me. The last time I took it though it seemed to speed me up and made me talk a mile a minute and rush around and do stupid things, my emotions were more controlled. Though I got very upset mainly from realising what an idiot I had been, I was able to keep my composure, until it wore off and then it was the usual loss of control of emotions.

I think the light feeling is like a mild high. The last time I took Ritalin it took a few minutes to feel that way but I had been off it for 5 months. The change from 10,000 thoughts to one was nice too.

Not everyone is affected the same way by stimulants. Some people who don't require to take it for hyperactivity-impulse issues will probably find themselves more like that and people who have such issues can be feel more calmer and in control after taking it.

I miss having that extra social ability but the meds leave me with extreme side effects. I think my ADHD can actually mitigate bipolar symptoms or I expend my energy too quickly to ever do anything disastrous from these quick manias. On Ritalin I last a lot longer and by the end of the day I'm full of immense regrets and depression.

I read that some people take adderall to improve focus for school, and what they describe about their improved focus is similar to what you describe, but they didn't say anything about the floating feeling or wanting to talk.

I hope they didn't take it illegally.

The speaking more thing wouldn't happen in those that have no problems socially unless they have bipolar, then it will just be like taking speed. But I've found in people with autism and even some with ADHD (inattentive type) that they want to speak more. Stimulants tend to make me more energetic too.

Adderall is a high-quality amphetamine. I love amphetamines.
