Hello, when I was young girl, about 7 years old, I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and ADHD. I only have two letters from the pediatrician as proof of this. In the letters it says that the pediatrician put me on medication for ADHD as well as Zoloft. But my mum stopped giving both to me as I became more Violent towards my younger siblings...

I grew up being told I was different but not really understanding how or why. I didn't see the doctor about my ASD anymore after that I believe. My mum decided to treat me the same as my NT siblings. Once I was in high school I began to try and hide my autism. I started being in denial about my diagnosis. And I totally even forgot about my ADHD supposed diagnosis. When I was about 20 years old, only then and when I first found this website did I really begin to accept my AS. I knew I was different and I tried to understand it more. I'm 26 now and I accept it but I still have a lot of difficulties.

In regards to the letters, only the first one mention ADHD, the second one where is says I stopped the medications doesn't mention it. It only mentions intellectual delay and ASD. So now I'm wondering if I really have ADHD. I think I do, as my mind tends to jump from one topic to another. I can become obsessed about certain topics which I know is typical with ASD, but these don't tend to last very long. I do lose interest in things quiet quickly despite being obsessed for a day or two. This has been very annoying and damaging for me. Especially in regards to studying and deciding what I want to do with my life. I just keep changing my damn mind. I can't seem to stay interested in anything for long enough. It drives me crazy at times. I have started and dropped out of a lot of college courses since leaving high school due to this. The worst part about it is I forget everything I have learned, unless I put it into practice....

I can also be compulsive. Buying things even though I know I can't afford to. Sometimes doing stuff without really thinking about it. Starting a lot of projects just to abandon them. I never finish anything I start... unless it is a TV Show or a video game (Sometimes.)

I am crap with time, I can't be in a routine or keep myself organised. I read that ASD individuals love having routines. I'm not like that at all... I'm very chill about routine. I don't like change though ironically. More like I don't like things being sprung on me suddenly.

I can also, half do one task, then stop and start another at times. Hmmm... sometimes my thoughts keep me up at night. I can't stop thinking about stupid non important things. I think, I should google this or that cause I ask myself random questions lol.

It all drives me crazy at times. I don't see myself as hyperactive physically, but I can be hyperactive mentally.

What do you think? Do I have ADHD as well as AS?
Is there anyone else who has both? I'd love to know your thoughts.

Thank you, and sorry for the length.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was 8 but I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until I was an adult. I don't know why, because I showed a lot of ADHD symptoms in childhood like hyperactivity, inattentiveness, impulsive behaviour and trouble with listening and remembering what I was taught in class. I also had trouble keeping track of time and I got stressed out from it.
I had social anxiety in the classroom so I had to mask my hyperactivity, but in the playground I was full of energy and it was a relief to be my hyper, chatty, bossy self. I've become much less bossy as I've gotten older though.

I never had any special interests or repetitive behaviours as a child, but when I was a teen and early 20s I developed intense obsessions with certain people. I love writing but I have about 8 or 9 notepads with unfinished stories, and I just find it so hard to sit still and focus. I'm prone to bouts of depression and I used to have poor anger management but being on meds have helped me control that.

You sound a lot like me regarding ADHD.

Thank you so much for responding. I really resonate with your last paragraph. I also love to write and started around the same age as you. I start stories and never finish them. I'd like to write a book one day if I can manage it.
I also suffer from depression and have been on and off antidepressants since I was 15. I'm currently on zoloft. We do sound alike in regards to ADHD, except I've never seen myself as physically hyperactive. I also experience social anxiety.

It's really nice to know there is someone like me out there. :)

Do you take medication for ADHD, if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of going to see my doctor about it.

I never have taken anything for ADHD, only for depression.

I do have the hyperactivity. I was hyperactive as a child and I'm erratic as an adult. I think being on Sertraline has worsened my erratic behaviour. But I can live with that because I'd rather be excitable and happy than sad and angry.

Vanilla93, since this is your first post, Welcome to Wrong Planet. Many people with ASD/Aspies also have ADHD.

Has anyone taken medication for ADHD and felt that it helped them?
