Has anyone here had the Amen brain scan? It is a new approach to diagnosing and treating mental and behavioral problems. It seems to make extreme sense, (actually LOOK at the brain first instead of just throwing labels and drugs at it), and I have been thinking for awhile that I need something like this. Anyone done it? Here is a link from a TED talk video about it.

(Amen is the guy's name. It has nothing to do with religion as far as I can tell.)

I have some neuroscience training and I have learnt to be cautious about brain imagery techniques, which yield results that are difficult to interpret and more generally all have some limitations. However, what that man says does make sense. It simply says that he thinks many mental health problems come from minor brain injuries and calls for attention on that point and more systematic examinations. I lack the actual expert knowledge to support or challenge such a claim, but many brain injuries can indeed be easily detected by brain scans (unlike many other things), and if that doctor did 83000 brain scans in the last 20 years he certainly is entitled to a worthy opinion on that topic. I would not call it a "new approach" but it is indeed an insightful comment.

As far as autism is concerned, it reminds me of those recent finding that were mentioned by Wired.
