Ugh Houses always need things. I could never have one of my own. It's too much like having a child. Owning a car is about as far as I can take it. Just the thought of a house as treatment makes me feel hives coming on. Maybe they could take care of the house too. And, furnish it while they're at it.

Isn't this just Otaku by a new name? I mean the word "Otaku" just used to denote a teen who wouldn't leave the house.

The hikikomori in japan is a major problem. Every aspect of a childs life in Japan is focused around competition with others. Due to the nature of the Japanese economy and employment practices, it's very hard to get a prestigous job unless you have an extensive education backround. The Japanese education system is also very exclusive, and only the smartest get in. As a result, the push to excell pushes many kids beyond the breaking point.

Japan also does not have an adequate mental health system so these cases are left to fester, sometimes for 20 years or more before they come out of their shells.

It's a truly sad situation over there.

This isn't the same as AS...this is adolescents locking themselves away from everything outside of their chosen room, a complete withdrawal from society brought on by extreme pressure to excel academically. Similar symptoms yes...but you're born with AS, and this phenomenon is brought on almost completely by society and related pressures.

And otaku...that would be the term for obsession nowadays An otaku is someone who is completely obsessed with something - eg: I am a Subaru otaku I think of nothing but my Impreza all day, I spend all my money on it, and I would consider no other car other than another Subaru...put simply, I'm obsessed with them.
