I told a friend, who I've known for more than half my life, and who shares my obsession with RC cars, that I think I have autism.
He said:
"I already know this also... I know ya really well...."

"I knew for the most part brother it don't matter to me what ya got or your quirks your my best friend now till they put my ass in the ground. In other words your f***ing stuck with me for awhile"

"I might have known longer then you, it makes no difference in our friendship tho"

I'm really, really lucky and happy to have good friends! I was really surprised that he figured it out before I did. His mom is an RN, and she agrees too. This was the third person who at least suspected I was on the spectrum long before I did!

Sometimes when I think about it, it feels a bit disconcerting that so many people close to me seemed to know this long before I had any idea that I may be autistic. I really wish someone would have told me sooner.

Well, it sure beats an overwhelmingly negative reaction, right? ;)

Just joking he sounds like a good friend.

If you think that gas turbine engines get better gas mileage than piston engines then you have autism.

I don't think most people my age unless they knew somebody on the spectrum would know more about Autism the "Rain Man" and they certainly would not know enough about it to think of me as autistic. As for Aspergers if asked they might remember hearing the word somewhere.

Gas turbines are, however, exponentially more interesting than MOST piston engines! (I find old, large steam engines mesmerizing)

Before I was diagnosed, very close friends of mine began to see sense in that ASD is probably what is "wrong" with me. They had other friends with ASD and saw bits of me, in their friends, and vice versa.
They help me out by telling me when I'm being too loud, or saying things I shouldn't, etc. and they encourage me to get involved in things. I do feel they speak down to me though a bit :(

Anyways, they probably knew I'd get diagnosed no quabbles, and so did I really, but it still shocks me (but definitely makes sense) that I also have ADHD.
I'm just glad after all the years of going "maybe I do, maybe I don't have ASD", I went to get a professional opinion instead.
I'm glad I'm diagnosed with ASD, because it means I'm not just some weird outcast, and I have a reason.

I hope you can get diagnosed too if you feel that's right for you. I can tell you I felt very relieved and happier when I was diagnosed, so I hope that does the same for you too.

It is nice though isn't it when someone sort of 'doesn't care' that you have ASD, and treats you as they would anybody else. I wouldn't want my friends to treat me differently.

Wind, it was a huge relief.

This is the third time someone knew before I did and confirmed it when asked. The first was my friend who is an OT and used to work with kids on the spectrum. I asked her if she thought I might have aspergers. She said "I've thought for years that you may be aspie!" A few months ago, she randomly asked her friend, who also works with autistic kids in a special school distric, if she thought I was on the spectrum. She said "Oh, he totally is!". Each time, I felt a huge wave of relief and validation, and I felt much better about myself!

I definitely want to go for a Dx. I hate having to preface a conversation by saying "I THINK Ihave autism", or "I'M PRETTY SURE I'm autistic." It makes me feel like a fake and I won't be taken seriously. And since I don't have a dx, I feel weird just saying "I AM autistic".
