I usually say the sky, moon, stars or ceiling or something like that in a very flat tone.

the most basic greeting english has to offer.

the most effective? i don't know.

but it is something i do not have to say laboriously (awkwardly).

Firstly, I will say that nothing irritates me more than when people say things like 'What's up' and 'how are you?'. I find them stupid questions really...pointless. I never ask how people are, I am afraid, as rude as that might seem. I prefer to skip those parts and just go right into a conversation. If someone does ask, it depends on my mood on how I answer. I have before responded with 'What's down?'. More often than not, I simply say 'nothing' or 'not much'.

or

".......easy, not much ...how's tricks?"

I find it much easier saying '..how's tricks'

(NB. 'easy' is a greeting, like 'hey' or 'hello' or 'alright' or 'bonjour')
