Does anybody else prefer to eat off of plastic plates, eat with plastic cutlery, and drink from plastic cups? I mean the more solid picnic type of plastic, not the disposable plastic.

I've never realised this before until just now when I was cooking. I went straight for the one plastic plate in the cupboard and the one plastic cup. It's all stuff left over from camping, but I don't like how my teeth bash against china cups, and knives and forks clang together and on plates making me cringe.

I don't have plastic cutlery, but I think I will invest in some. I now realise why I prefer plastic.

I'm the same way. I have a plastic cup that is my favorite and I hate the way metal cutlery sounds against a ceramic plate/bowl. I use plastic whenever I can.

I am the opposite, I avoid plastic as much as possible. I dislike the texture of it and the taste. I especially hate to drink out of a plastic bottle or cup because I can taste the plastic so strongly. I still drink bottled water, because I'd rather deal with the taste of plastic than the taste of tap water. But I prefer to get water in BPA-free bottles, like Eternal, because I don't notice the taste so much in those.

I hate the way it feels when a plastic fork or spoon bends inside my mouth, yuck. Also feel sort of grossed out by food stored in plastic containers. I prefer glass or porcelain containers.

Yes very much so. I am going to cook a nice steak dinner tonight and as always I will use my hard plastic plate I bought for that purpose. I cannot stand having a knife hit glass its like nails on chalkboard. I also use a separate plate for the mushrooms and onions and a plastic glass. I can eat it without plastic if I have to but don't enjoy it nearly as much. Glad I am not the only one.

Personally, I hate eating steaks off of plates made of disposable materials like plastic or paper or styrofoam, as it's simply too easy to cut through the plate, and you end up with the delicious drippings being trapped in these grooves and indendations made by the knife and fork. Similarly, though you don't have to worry about cutting through the plate with hard plastic, I still find that hard plastic plates tend to get scratched up really easily when you eat anything off of them that requires a knife to cut.

Sensory-wise, I don't like the clang and clatter of metal utensils against ceramic or glass either, but since they are the most practical materials to eat from, I'm just careful not to make too much noise with them when I eat. Now if only other people were so considerate...

My wife has this one set of fancy green square plates she likes - I hate them beacuse of the screech you get when cutlery rubs against them. Makes nails on a blackboard seem pleasant.

I know an autistic girl , IRL, who can't stand the feel of plastic either. I have no strong feelings about plastic either way.

There's a few studies that have shown a strong link between plastics and prostate cancer. Basically some chemical that is supposedly safe in plastics is being found in very high quantities in people with said cancer.

Apparently it leeches into the food if you heat the plastic up (microwave your plastic container).

I've always preferred plastic spoons and paper or plastic cups.

They are using non-microwavable plastic possibly?

I have mixed responses-- I "imagine" that water tastes better (more "pure") from a glass container (and certain plastic cups DO, I swear, transfer a plastic taste to water) but I have a strong negative response to the sound and feel of of metal & ceramics banging into each other at the dinner table. I have a particular feeling of rage about glass table-tops (like, at cafes)-- the sound and feel of a glass drinking cup hitting a glass table-top makes me cringe. Cringe actually isn't a strong enough word for how I feel in that particular situation.

I guess in general I have a lot of weird "rules" and preferences about food & drink vessels… like when I see someone use a coffee-cup to drink water, it just ANNOYS me to no end… because I know that would make the water seem "gross" to me? lol.

I wont eat off silverware that has designs (raised off the utensil that can be touched). It irks me. Or if it's the wrong size, too big or too small. I'd rather eat with the wrong utensil than one that isn't "right". I never really have a problem with plastic because they're smooth.

Right, it is bisphenol-A (BPA). It has also been linked to breast cancer. It definitely leaches into food or beverages when the plastic is heated. Leaving bottled water in a hot car does it too. The thin, crinkly types of plastic bottles are the most dangerous.

BPA mimics estrogen so it can really screw up the body's endocrine system and hormonal balance.

Some plastics are BPA free, it will say that somewhere on the label. But it's hard to find those. Eternal water is bottled in BPA-free plastic.

I doubt it. There's hardly a product today that is non-microwaveable.

If you buy a plastic product that is used to store food it will be microwaveable. We're talking plastic dishes, containers, etc that people usually store and heat food in.

Personally I prefer glass. It always preserves the taste (particularly in my home-made pickled veggies!) and it doesn't stain or warp like plastic does (over time).

as for cutlery... I'm a firm believer in chopsticks. Best thing ever invented :)

I like chopsticks for noodles, don't have a pair, keep meaning to, but it's not practical for some British food like tinned beans and stuff.
