Went to the library yesterday and let a painfully shy, wonderful guy get in line ahead of me. He had a tower of anime novels. Not one or two, more like 20. I think he must have got the entire series. Just looking at his mannerisms, I thought, I wonder if he's got Asperger's too. He set his stack on the counter and apologized quietly and profusely to the librarian for making her check all those books. Then he half-turned to me and repeated the apologies, only more emphatically, since I was the one who had to wait behind him. I said something dumb like "It's okay, that's a lot of good reading."

What I wish I'd said was, "Don't be sorry, you made me smile. I'm absolutely delighted. You seem to have a lot of pain and anxiety, but you love something, and you want it ALL; it was so surprising, innocent, and hyperbolically human, and I love you for it."

Imagine if the kid is actually on this website, and read this?

That would be so cool! :P

I don't think people on the spectrum would be interested in comic books about interpersonal relationships and people in social situations. I'm autistic and I have a very weak interest in people as do many others on the spectrum. Why would I possibly enjoy anime? Why would I care about the characters and their interpersonal relationships when I don't even care for this kind of thing in real life?(Autistic). The most important point here is I cannot even relate to any of these situations and that makes me frustrated and confused(Autistic). I have a weak "pretend play" imagination and prefer non fiction and factual things(Autistic) so why would I believe in anime stories? How can I understand anime when I read a fictional book and often forget who the main characters are when they re-enter the scene?!?!. And well, the last thing I would do is put another person as my avatar.

I am starting to think people who like anime are typically shy or introverted and naturally confuse themselves as having autism...

just sayin'

So people with autism can't like anime...and if an autistic does like anime they are just introverted or shy and don't really have autism? You do realize not all autistics despise humanity and some of us do interact with people even if its not in a 'normal' way that would make us seem normal. I do desire to have some social interactions and friendships in my life, its getting them that can be the hard part due to autism...but my having autism doesn't mean i have no intrest whatsoever in other people or what they do. Just because you prefer non-fiction and don't like anime doesn't mean everyone else on the spectrum is the same and wouldn't read anime comic books....from what I understand plenty of autistics have a special interest in anime most likely

In my mind it seems highly unusual for an autistic person to be so absorbed into a fictional characters life... I feel I'm right about this. I don't despise humanity, I just cant relate. I do wish for connection with people, a best friend with exactly the same interests...but generally I am content on my own.

If you ever see him again you could tell him. That sounds like a cool experience and something that happens in animé a lot (a boy walking in a library carrying a lot of books) (:

I have autism and I love anime. Many autistic people on this site love anime.

Liking anime does not mean you are not autistic.

That was a rather illogical statement and somewhat confusing ): You appeared to be judging everyone with autism based on your own feelings. The all important phrase that everyone should remember "If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism".

I don't get it, I like machines and technical/factual things not people or fantasy.

How could you not possibly feel the same as me if you are autistic?

Because not every autistic person is identical to you.

I like machines and technical/factual things too, they make up the majority of my life. This is why autism is called a spectrum disorder, because there are varying ranges of disability and ways of perceiving something. I don't necessarily like people but I find fantasy fascinating, studio ghibli in particular is wonderful to me.

XFilesGeek how can you relate to those people in your avatar, how can you STAND putting another person as your avatar? Are you not intimidated by them? frustrated by them? confused? annoyed? because you know they understand the social world or are in the "Inner circle" of things?

I don't.

Because they're the stars of my favorite television show.

I don't usually have strong emotional reactions to other people. I'm fairly indifferent towards humanity.

Doesn't it annoy you to have them there? Why wouldn't you put the xfiles logo instead?
