Has society changed?
I never could tie my shoes until I was 20. Everyone from therapists to teachers were constantly up my butt about the fact I couldn't tie my shoes. When I started wearing velcro shoes they were on my case about how I need to learn how to tie them. I only got bullied about my velcro shoes by other kids once or twice and only because they weren't a traditionally girly aesthetic. Despite the fact everyone at this school knew I was a tomboy. Kids are weird I guess. But when I became an adult, no tie shoes became popular for everyone. Not just children or adults with disabilities.
I also couldn't bring a stuffed animal in public with me as a child without being called childish. But I grow up, start using a backpack that is basically a stuffed animal everyone thinks it's cool. Did all the grouchy adults from my childhood turn into grouchy elders and go into nursing homes and all the kids become cool adults or something? Seriously, why is this stuff not taboo anymore? I'm not complaining. I just want to know why it's acceptable now. And why it was taboo back then

I would say that society has embraced being more childish and that the economic circumstances of a lot of western countries doesn't allow people to be independent, and leaves a lot of people in a state of suspended development on a social level.
In regards to a person who is autistic, I think that society is less judgmental (though discrimination still does go on), when it comes to viewing autistic folk and the social tendencies that are sometimes associated with that, i.e, being in touch with one's inner child or being behind one's developmental years in terms of years.
Those could be some of the reasons why being a bit weird or childish is considered to be more acceptable now, versus say, a few decades ago.
