Today at work I was talking to someone. I like this woman a lot, but at the moment she was going on about her homeland, a story I'd heard about 3 times already and I was just kind of nodding my head trying to force myself to pay attention. Just then my boss walked up and started picking up stuff he'd left there. He said hi to me, but I didn't know how to unlock my brain from trying to pay attention to the woman, so I didn't respond. Then he stood up and looked at me and asked, "How are you?" Meanwhile the woman kept talking. I was like OH Crap, I know I'm supposed to say something simple to him, but WHAT IS IT? I was almost in a panic, trying to split between both of them when I remembered the correct response - "I'm ok, how are you?"

Geez. You'd think I could manage that much!

This is why I'm so tired at the end of every work day. And nobody where I work has a clue I have these problems, they just all think I'm intentionally rude, or I get in moods or something.

in that situation I'd be like a deer in the headlights also. you are not alone in this.

maybe one day when your pension comes in, you can do it, but scrimp and save now while you are still working. if it means paring evenings out to once per month, then so be it.

I think the woman should have stopped talking when your boss talked to you, to give you a chance to answer him, that's why you were kind of "stuck between the two of them", because she continued talking. It wasn't your fault, don't blame yourself.

one has to do some quick thinking in those situations, to be able to fluently shift back and forth between two parties that are both demanding one's attention, in the manner of "excuse me miss A, I have to answer the boss now," and maybe miss A will take the hint and let you do what you have to do. here's to hopin' in any case.

I would just answer 'very busy' to satisfy boss and hopefully give the woman a 'hint'...

...but I am terrible at conversing also, so disregard the above. lol
