I constantly have to spell out words in my head, does anyone else do this? Is it part of my Asperger's? Is it a stim?

For whatever reason, it is very useful!

I bet you are great at playing Scrabble.

It's not a stim, but it sounds like a frustrating compulsion/ritual.

I've done this and a variety of things since early childhood. I have motor tics, and I think of this as a sort of mental tic. I don't think it's a stim.

When I need to spell a word, sometimes I have to visualize it in my head.

With phone numbers, oddly, sometimes I am able to "remember" a phone number through the memory of the way in which I touch the touch-tones.

i only have spell them out if they're in English.

with (most) other languages that are more phonetic, i don't really have to. i favor those languages, what you hear is what is read/written.

It's not so much remembering a word and how it's spelt.
When I see a word or words written down I spell them in my head, the words are usually shop names, street names, town/city names, business names etc. I will be in the car and see the name of a company on the side of a van and be repeatedly spelling the name in my head until I see a different word, then I'll be spelling that one instead. And it's not usually the whole word. If it's a few words and they have capital letters than I'll be repeating the capital letters.
For example, if I see 'Howes' I will be spelling out 'Howes' in my head. If I see 'E J Howes' I will be spelling 'E J H' in my head.
It is very annoying especially since I can't stop doing it even when I have a headache :(

All right.....now I get it. I know how that could be annoying, especially if you have a headache.

The only solution, really, especially if you could afford it, is therapy.

Otherwise, I would make use of "reality testing"--telling yourself what you're doing is somewhat ridiculous and useless (but don't keep doing that--then THAT will become a compulsion!)

At least you have insight--the first step towards the resolution of your situation.

Thanks. Not sure I can afford therapy at the moment. I keep trying not to do it, I know it's stupid but yeah it's like a compulsion. So annoying. At least no body can see it, except when it gets really bad and I start moving my head, I'm always watching in case I start doing that too.
