I think this is an excellent video by someone who looks like she has a regular show entitled "Ask an Autistic"

Her points include:

Autism Speaks only spends about 4% of it's budget helping actual autistic persons.

It spends 44% on what's called research, but much of that is towards trying to find a prenatal test. (!)

None of its board members are on the Spectrum. John Elder Robinson was involved tangentially as an advisor. But he recently resigned and in a letter, said just why he resigned.

Much of their fundraising involves scaremongering and perpetuating all kinds of negative and inaccurate stereotypes.

-----------

And the author concludes on a positive note by mentioning more promising organizations for those of us on the Autism Spectrum

As examples of positive organizations, she mentioned:

Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN)
(Disclosure: I am an inactive member of ASAN)
http://autisticadvocacy.org/

The Golden Hat Foundation
http://www.goldenhatfoundation.org/

and several others which I think she might list in the description of her video.

PS Although with the Golden Hat Foundation, where they talk about their film and say "Perhaps it is possible to break down the wall of autism and get to know the individual behind it?", I'd really have several questions about this in response.

do you know by any chance of any research that goes on outside of bigger organisations looking for the "cure" to autism? Like if there's any decent research funded by people who actually have experience with or are on the autistic spectrum themselves?

I know Michelle Dawson is part of a team researching visual-spatial strengths in autistic people.

Other than that, I'm not sure.
