Hello everyone, I have problems retaining what I'm reading, resulting in me forgetting the important details such as the physical visualization of the environment in a book but also names and the important character's name resulting in me getting the bigger picture (story) instead. I'm also quite slow at reading books, it can take me 2 hours to read 30 pages which is close to non existant in comparision to a 300 pages book.

Is this associated with a form of learning disability or a neurological condition such as ADD or Autism?

I've always had trouble retaining verbal instructions and pieces of information, I usually do comprehend 30-40% of what that is said to me so therefor they have to repeat it and I'm very often failing to work in conditions where this is expected from me such as cooking (especially in school) where I simply enough can't remember what my advisors are explaining to me, they usually have to repeat 2-4 times.

My final question is, do YOU have trouble reading books? In that case can you specify the diagnosis you've recieved and formulate your process of reading for me so that I can gather a deeper understanding and hopefully talk to a psychologist?

Thanks.

Edit: The [5] option is that you have troubles reading but the most noticable problem is your concentration skills and [1] is that you can't retain much of the information, not all.

If I could pick option (5) I would as that is what my difficulties are.

I have always had good reading comprehension and I would say my reading speed is average. However, like you mention, I struggle a lot with retaining verbal information. I feel like I remember almost everything I read with reasonable accuracy, but very little of what I'm told verbally.

Are my problems most likely caused by ADHD inattentive subtype? I've considered myself to be neurologically wired as a ADD person would be, that might actually be the cause. What about the intellectual perspective, might that really inflict some damage on my skills? I've always been good at science so I don't think that is the cause. :?:

you can have an affinity for science but nevertheless still have frontal lobe issues with sustained/focused attention. a key home test you could do, would be to take some caffeine, like the amount in two strong cups of coffee, and see if it makes you relaxed or jittery- if it is the former, chances are good that you would do well with stimulant meds for your frontal lobes [like norpramin, concerta or Strattera]. I did that and while my insurance was paying for it, I felt cognitively normal for the first and only time in my life, I could read stuff and it would be quickly absorbed into my brain with minimal effort.

Have difficulty remembering what I read in a book. very slow reader. Often have to reread a paragraph. Have adhd and dyslexia, but think autism plays a part as well.
