I'm just wondering if any of you guys use those PECS card thingys.

Have you used them in the past? Are you still using them? What kind of ones do you use? How do they help you?

I use a lot of them everyday. My cards;

Image

I have lanyard with two key ring card thingys (I don't really know what you call them) one for emotions and another for just going out to the town and stuff. I have a book with quite a few pages. I have keying card thingys with routines for getting dressed, street safety etc. I have a lot of stuff on my bedroom walls and around the house. Calming down posters, Now, Next, Later board(the cards for that are in the transparent folder in the picture), How I Am Feeling board, Planners (lots of planners and timetables).

It really helps me and now that I have finished my first year of college and that it is now the summer holidays, it is important that I have a strict routine.

So, does anybody else use these or is it just me (I doubt it's just me)?

Coda, it sounds like you've really gone far in your young life.

Were you nonverbal until a very late age?

I was nonverbal until about age 5-6. (From what my parents have told me) before then, I used to grunt and point (still do) or copied people's sentences. The cards I have now are used for when I don't feel comfortable enough to vocalise my needs (like in public) or when I'm having a meltdown and can't speak.

I didn't speak until I was 5, either.

They didn't have PECS when I was a kid.

Sometimes, I have difficulty expressing my emotions in a coherent way.

What are you taking up in college?

I'm currently doing iMedia Level 2 which consists of things like website design and coding, game design and coding, animation, photoshop, photography, digital art and computer hardware and software. After the summer holidays, I'll be doing Level 3 which lasts for 2 years and is absically all those things but more in-depth and difficult and also introduces 3D modelling.

You should try to get an internship as soon as possible, so you could start getting things on your CV/resume.

Excellent luck to you!

Yeah, I've been thinking of doing something like that. I've been doing some charity work here and there but yeah, I'll be looking into getting an internship. Thank you :D

What type of place is Shirley, Surrey? I like England and its landscape.

My wife's son lives in Bromley, Greater London.

It's Shirley, Croydon, Surrey, United Kingdom. I don't add Croydon because I don't want people knowing I live on the outskirts of Croydon.

I was born in Scarborough but moved to Shirley in 2008.

Is that the same Croydon that's in Greater London?

LOL My wife's son goes there all the time to shop; I think it's actually the biggest "city" in Greater London, aside from London itself.

He's a doctor who works at a hospital in Lewisham.

Yeah it's that Croydon. Biggest city? Huh, when I go there it never seems to be too big but that might be because I stick around the shopping centre and main shops. I don't like wandering into streets as it causes me panic attacks.

I don't like it in Croydon, either. It's too shop-heavy. I think, in England, they call it a "shopping precinct."

I should have said "biggest borough," rather than "biggest city" LOL

Are you familiar with Woolwich, Eltham, Shooter's Hill, Blackheath? My wife's son used to live in Shooter's Hill. I like Blackheath's heath.

Are you allowed to use your PECS card in your college?

...Seeing this reminds me that , since you're in the UK , I don't entirely understand how " city " versus " suburb " is defined in the UK especially as it relates to London ! !!
From my limited investigation it appears that it's done a little differently than that difference is defined in the US ~ especially in relation to New York City and its suburbs , which is where I grew up .
I'll detail this more later , i am hurried now...

A good friend of mine goes to a college called Shooters Hill, apart from that I'm clueless of that area. In fact, recognising street names and areas is a weak point of mine. It's one of the main reasons why I always get lost; even on my own street.

I do take them in college and use the emotions one a lot but since 90% of my time is at a computer and I also have an LSA (learning support assistant) with me at all times, I don't really have the need to use the others.

Unless of course I go on a trip, then I take ALL of them because going to a new place is very stressful and the PECS cards are something akin to a comfort blanket for me as well as a way to communicate.

Are you going to "university?" Here in the US, "college" is the exact same thing as "university."
