I find that when I write, I often drop words from sentences and don't notice until I reread the text at some later time.
I write on the computer almost exclusively, so I am not sure if this happens with handwriting, or if the extra concentration and care required for handwriting somehow prevents whatever causes these dropped words.

It's embarrassing when one clause of an otherwise well written sentence suddenly seems to have been written by a non-native English speaker because I have dropped an article or pronoun in a weird way.

I think this may be symptomatic of an underlying processing disorder that shows up in other areas, notably a paradoxical problem with organizing despite having an excellent ability to see and even design organized systems.

I wonder if any other people here have this symptom and if there is any correlation with some part of the spectrum.

Is it possible that you are merely rushing when you write?

I do the same precise thing when I rush. I also substitute one word for a another.

It's possible--I certainly think much faster than I can write.
But I find it happens more often than I would have imagined and in the same way.

For example, this sentence might come out like:

"For example, sentence might come out like:"

(if I did this recursively, there would be no sentence at all after seven iterations!)

I'm more likely to do that when speaking. Or else I structure my sentences backwards. Kinda like master Yoda, but I make less sense. I've said the last two words of a sentence first and the first ones last before. But I always notice it and repeat myself correctly right away.

Adam - don't hit send until you have checked and rechecked several times - there is a 'preview' button on most forums, including this one.

I quite often compose a post on a word processor before pasting it into a forum reply.

If I'm emailing someone, I'll frequently save it for a while and then re-read it before sending.

If I'm using snailmail, I'll almost always print it out first, but wait until the following day so that I can re-read it before I mail it.

I am good at spotting little details, though words are harder.

Lumi - have you noticed that, in recent years, very few paperback novels are completely clear of errors?

Not many years ago, one of the many get-rich-quick schemes which were widely advertised was 'proof-reading' - whatever happened to that?

I once met a lady who made a good living proof-reading scientific journals and papers - I guess spell-checkers are cheaper to run.

Yes, I find I do this pretty chronically and it frustrates me. However, it's my own fault as I also tend to be impatient to get my post posted, and I neglect to look it over properly or hit Preview. I usually just type, then hit Submit. I ten-finger-touchtype so most of the time I am actually looking at the screen and the words I'm typing, so there's no excuse -- yet when I read it back, I still find that I missed out words! I think I'm just really careless. It happens more if I'm tired or stressed out.

I think many people do that.

I sometimes edit a sentence and forget to add, delete or change a word/words, leaving a stupid mistake in the sentence.

For some reason I often drop the word 'know' when I try to write 'I don't know...'. For example, I might end up writing 'I don't if it's true' when I mean to write 'I don't know if it's true'. I have seen other people do the exactly the same.

This happens to me constantly. Actually it happens almost every single time I type something. It sometime happens when I hand write and speak too. It could be that the brain is thinking at a different speed than the hands or mouth can keep up with or there could be a breakdown in the processing somewhere. Some times I have to proofread four or five times to get it right. Sometimes I even drop entire phrases.

Unfortunately, my mind seems to have a creative/generative mode that is not good at proofing and a proofing mode that is not particularly creative or likely to produce writing.

When I am writing and check over what I have written, I am somehow blind to the errors. Only when I proof or read in a different mode do I see them.

It's annoying.

My thoughts come out back to front, partially formed, or jumbled. It doesn't happen all the time, but frequently when I write/type and sometimes when I talk. My laptop is back from being fixed :) I'm using word processing again and it?s much easier to type than on a mobile device.

I miss out words frequently when I write or type. I do it most often with words like "not". Which, obviously, significantly alters the meaning of the sentence it should be in. I also make spelling errors in words I know how to spell. This doesn't seem to be related to/caused by rushing, but may be made worse by fatigue.

I don't tend to this when I speak, but I do sometimes think a correct word, but then say a related one instead, such as thinking "Lion King" and saying "The Jungle Book".

I miss out words when I talk, but not when I write.

E.g. Going to the shop would become Going shop. But that's how we all talk round here.

I drop words too. Even when I proofread I don't notice the missing word unless I wait a while before I proofread. It's why I often have to edit my posts - I come back later and notice my boo-boo's.

Doesn't help that I'm a bit dsylexic as well...
