Yeah, this is why I use adblock on this site.
I have adblock turned off on some sites I want to support, but WP isn't one of them, because many of the ads I've seen around here are simply not the sort of people I want to support. Boarding schools for autistics, miracle cures, ABA... No. Not until WP boycotts abusive autism therapies and fear-and-pity "awareness" will I take my adblock off.
I can see the other side of the situation; I can see that WP needs the money to stay open; I can see the pragmatism of it, but I am glad I'm not the one responsible for making the decision to allow ads of this sort.
I'm here, though, because WP does more good than harm, despite the advertising and altogether too many attempts to woo Autism Speaks. WP does stand for autism rights, and does speak out against the worst "treatments". I think they are too careful to stay away from controversy, but they don't censor people who take more controversial positions, and that's good enough to make WP a useful place where we can go to say what we think.
hi callista,
some special boarding schools are very good for autistics, am a adult day student at one called the david lewis centre;
http://www.davidlewis.org.uk/
its a boarding+day specialist school and college for people with LFA,acute cognitive affecting epilepsy and intelectual disability.
most students on the adult courses get specialist paying jobs out of it,some even work for the centre now,have been to many special colleges before;expelled from all of them [three],this is the only one that has truly understood and accomodated self.
wish had gone there as a child,its an amazing site/grounds.
