My son is 8 and for the longest time I have known in my heart something is wrong. He didn't talk until he was almost 3, Doctors have always said all kids are different. He has forever lined up toys and knows when one is moved ever so slightly. He make repeated sounds and does this movement where he rubs his hand up and down his legs very fast over and over again for about a minute. He is really struggling in school and has many moments where he turns from a good boy to a bad boy. My 4 year old says he hates his brother because once minute he's nice to him the next he's trying to hit him and destroys his toys. His eyes move so very fast when he's like this. He wants to know how everything works he takes everything apart. He does something that amazes me, We can take him by car to a place he has never been within the City we live in and he can take us there again the next day he knows every turn. He is not affectionate at all and I have to ask for a cuddle. My other two children are nothing like him. I have looked up all his systems but they all don't pinpoint one diagnosis Does anyone have a idea or have a child that is the same? I don't know if I wrong, Or if I do just have a boy who is different. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all so very much.

I think the best advice is see if you could bring your son to get screened to see if infact he does as Autism or what is known today as Autism Spectrum Disorder some of what you've mentiond "He didn't talk until he was almost 3... He has forever lined up toys He make repeated sounds and does this movement where he rubs his hand up and down his legs very fast over and over again for about a minute." are indicative of Autism.

A lot of his behaviour does sound like he might be on the autism spectrum. If you have a pediatrician he or she would be able to refer you to a clinician who can screen him for autism and, if he is autistic, help you with getting your son some of the support he may need.

Take care - good luck. :D

I understood what was said to me as a child, but had much trouble speaking and writing.

What exactly is wrong with your son?

I think this is what Debodeb is trying to figure out.

I would definitely recommend getting him assessed: he's still young, so there are a lot of things doctors can do to help with his problems at school and at home. The sooner you get a diagnosis, the easier going into treatment will be. If you wait til he's an adult, there will be very little help available. With a diagnosis, his school will be able to get him whatever social and academic help he needs so he doesn't fall behind.
