Does music help you cope with certain things? Like, does it calm you down depending on what you are listening to? I ask because I've noticed how a certain band I like, Simple Plan, has helped me in many ways. It's kept me from self-harming or doing things I might end up regretting later. I know often times that autistic people can have a very deep connection to music, so I was wondering how many of you have that connection. If you do, how has music helped you? It's always helped me stay focused and more concentrated on whatever I'm working on too, especially if I'm writing a story or playing a game.

I was just curious about this... because they say that music can help people with autism.

It definitely helps me. I have listen to music often to get through the day or help me sleep.

Music helps me so much! If it wasn't the fact that it would be harmful to my audition i would listen music almost 24 hours per day.
I work in a hospitalar area, so every time that an ambulance siren starts to sound (sometimes there are more than one at the same time, it's a nightmare) i need the help of some music so i don't freak out. Sometimes if i'm too tense at work it helps me to relax and work better. When i can't sleep it helps me sleeps (well, not always because there are times that i start to pay too much attention to the music and loose any hope of sleep xD) Everytime that i leave my home, and i can, i'm wearing some earphone and listening to some good music.

That's exactly how I am. Music often blocks out the noise around me, whether it bugs me or not. I don't have sensory overloads because of the high dosage stimulant I'm on, which for some odd reason seems to help regulate how much I take in everyday. Anyway, I do get bothered by the individual noises like thunder, sirens, motorcycles and stuff like that. Music has helped my anxiety a lot though and given me an understanding towards the fact that I'm not the only one dealing with what I have gone through.

Music definitely has a calming effect on me, which is why I tend to put certain songs on repeat. Most of the time I have a song in my head anyway, or I'm humming to myself. While it can calm, or cheer me up, sometimes it can make me feel worse.

Yes and no. Music generally helps, but every now and then I hear a song and become completely obsessed with it. During this time, it's the only song I can listen to. The words play over and over in my head. I need to work out how to play it on my guitar, and I play it, over and over. I find myself writing out the lyrics, over and over. I get obsessed with the band. I watch the music video, over and over. Arrrrgh!

Yes I do think music helps. For me it gives access and "words" to emotions I couldn't otherwise express. I think it's a good compromise between meltdown and blank which I fluctuate between when it comes to dealing with my own emotions! I love the choral music of Eric Whitacre and Morten Lauridsen. Really emotive stuff that!

to drown out my sometimes noisy neighbors, nothing works quite as well as the sound of the ocean waves I have on a CD that gets frequent play. in quieter conditions when I am feeling tense or out of sorts, I put on recordings of nature sounds or of bells. when I am in a better mood I like listening to my fave Wurlitzer theatrical pipe organ recordings. sometimes I listen to the harry Zimmerman big band, a rousing brassy treat for the ears and by extension the psyche.

My video game music and relaxing music (I don't know how to really explain it, I just youtubed it) help me relax at times

Music helps me out a great deal. It gets me through the day or evening. Sometimes I listen to The Kinks and sometimes I listen to British 60s Radio, which is my favourite radio station on the Internet. It depends on if I need to listen to the band that speaks to me the most, or if I need a wide variety of bands from the same country.
